With the DHS removing protections against spying on LGBT people, everyone should consider using an end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging service for their messages. Some of you will say, “Let the government read my messages. They’re boring and I got nothing to hide.” Well, that’s not the point. The point is we should have the right to privacy in our communications. Letting the government (esp. this government) snoop is another erosion of our rights. Some popular messaging apps are: -Text messages (SMS): NOT encrypted. Easy to hack. -Text Messages via RCS: A confusing mess. The messages can be E2EE but it depends on what app the other person is using. -Apple’s iMessage: E2EE by default, but only for messages sent to other iMessage users (blue bubbles). Messages sent as a text message (SMS) (green bubbles) are not encrypted as SMS does not support encryption. -Google Messages: Only encrypted if both people are using Google Messages with RCS turned on, otherwise not encrypted. -Signal app: Uses open-source E2EE by default with strong privacy features. -Telegram app: NOT recommended as E2EE is not turned on by default. E2EE is only enabled for “Secret Chats.” Also, Telegram has had a fair share of controversies over the years. -What’s App: Uses Signal’s open-source E2EE platform by default, but is owned by Meta (Facebook/Zuckerberg) which brings up a lot of concerns. -Facebook Messenger: Also a confusing mess. It began supporting E2EE, but only as “secret conversations.” It then began rolling out E2EE to everyone, but only on new conversations, and only if the other person had the latest version of the app. And obviously, it brings up the same concerns of Meta ownership as What’s App. There are more, but these are the most popular.
