Mid-co Estévez Wednesday night marked Nico Estévez’s 100th match in charge of an MLS Side. In those 100 matches his teams are an almost perfectly middling 33-34-33 and his sides have a +1 GD with 118 goals for and 117 goals against (shoutout to LV Slack for the info). After the (too late) firing of Josh Wolff at the end of the season we were told by Rodolfo Borrell that there are “names you wouldn’t believe” interested in the job and to his credit, the coach fired mid-season by one of the few clubs who were worse than Austin last season was not a name I would believe he would be interested in hiring. In his time here we’ve seen Austin play uninspiring soccer with uninspiring results, now sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference with a -7GD and the fewest goals scored in the league. The club broke it’s transfer record multiple times on a front line and added in better players all over the pitch, but at this time it’s tough to think that the best way to get this team back to the playoffs is with Nico in charge.

Anti-Football There have only been 23 goals scored in the 13 MLS matches Austin FC has played in this season, this is currently second fewest in the league behind only the New England Revolution (22 in only 11 matches). For comparison chaos ball favorites San Jose Earthquakes have had 52! goals scored in 13 games, having scored more goals themselves (29) than all goals scored in Austin FC matches. This makes every chance more important and puts much more pressure on a defense to be perfect, as was evidenced on Wednesday. It’s a bad strategy to have to hold your opponents scoreless to be able to get a victory and it’s a strategy that Nico has utilized throughout his coaching career.
