Newspaper story from Syracuse Herald : Railway to Replace Women Workers Men Will Be Hired When Vacancies Occur. Omaha, Neb., Aug. 6 (AP).—The Union Pacific Railroad gradually will replace its women employes on the Omaha to Ogden, Utah, system by men as vacancies occur in all positions, except stenographers and comptometer operators, under an order issued by W. M. Jeffers, general manager. G. H. Sines, assistant to the vice president in charge of operations, explained that no women would be dismissed. Sines declined to discuss reasons for the order, or whether it would extend to other parts of the Union Pacific system, which includes lines west of Ogden and through Kansas. About 600 women are now employed at Omaha headquarters, one-third of them stenographers and comptometer operators. The normal replacement of women employes is said to be large, due to the fact that many marry each year or leave for other reasons, leading to the belief that women workers will be cut to a nominal figure in a few years.

Chicago, Aug. 5 (AP).—Spooners now may view the summer moon in Lincoln Park unmindful of the passing blue coat. The park board has lifted its ban and extended a welcome to all lovers to the park. "Spooning should be done in a wholesome atmosphere where romance comes naturally," said Superintendent Emile Johnson, "and where is a more natural place than among the beautiful trees in the park?" The South Park commissioners applauded the action, but West Park officers declared they would not permit spooning in parks under their jurisdiction. "Give the young people good exercise and sports and they will forget about spooning," said Capt. William Stocker of the West Side police.
INTOXICATED MAN ALLEGEDLY CLAIMS HE WAS A SERIAL KILLER SOUTHWEST HARBOR—On August 2, at approximately 6:20 p.m., someone called the Southwest Harbor Police Department to tell them that he had stopped to ask a motorist if he needed any assistance and the motorist told him that he was a serial killer and was in town to take care of a Southwest Harbor resident. Officer Eli Brown was able to locate the motorist, who was intoxicated, and confirmed that he was in fact in town to visit a family member and was not in town to murder someone.

The children discovered the body of Mrs. Joseph Millman with a bullet hole in her temple and beside her that of her son, Martin, with a similar hole in his head. His little body lay crumpled over a sand pail and shovel.

Mr. Ross, an evangelist, and Mrs. Jerome Robinson of Butler County, were killed last night in church near here while the opening hymn of revival services was being sung. The preacher toppled from the pulpit dead and Mrs. Robinson, wife of a farmer, who was sitting in the front row of the choir, died an hour later. Several persons narrowly missed being struck by the shots, which were fired through an open window. Clifford Wilson was arrested and held for investigation after a girl, 14, told officers she saw him fire the shots. County officers today were following with bloodhounds other trails from the church.

Use of castor oil as a preventative of infantile paralysis was urged today by Dr. Wilbur S. Newell, 825 Midland Avenue. Dr. Edward J. Dick, 638 North Salina Street, is credited by Dr. Newell with being the one to discover the use of castor oil as a precaution against the disease during the last outbreak in Syracuse. "Castor oil serves to clear the system of subjects that spread the polio germs," Dr. Newell said today. "It has saved many lives in cases where does of it have been taken in time." The 16th case of infantile paralysis in Syracuse was reported to health authorities today. The latest victim is said to be a boy living in Bellevue Avenue.

Infantile paralysis has taken a toll of two deaths among the 12 patients reported suffering from the disease, it was announced today by Dr. George C. Ruhland, deputy health commissioner. The latest death from the malady was that of Gordon Root, 22, of Worcester, Otsego County, Syracuse University student who was making up by summer courses, classes he missed through illness last year. He showed symptoms of the malady Thursday and was confined to a hospital where serum was administered at once. The serum did not take effect, however, because of the advanced stage the illness had reached and he died last night. He was suffering from a particularly acute variety of the disease which attacks the respiratory nerve centers and paralyses them instead of paralyzing the limbs as the ordinary variety of the disease does.

After two weeks' suffering from the effects of poison left by a physician for external use in the treatment of poison ivy, the young man died last night at 10 o'clock at the Syracuse General Hospital.

J., July 27 ($\text{\textit{AP}}$).—A man and wife barricaded themselves in their home near Port Republic yesterday and engaged in a three hour gun fight with four State troopers until the husband was finally wounded in the leg and forced to surrender. The wounded man is Frederick Gernet. He and his wife, Freda, were arrested after the battle and taken to Mays Landing where they are being held in the county jail to await an examination by physicians, who will determine their sanity.According to the police, both Gernet and his wife were formerly inmates of an asylum. They were released about five months ago when it was thought they were cured.

Waterloo, July 23 (UP)—Daniel Clark, of Geneva, proprietor of a second hand store, is being held here on an open charge, pending investigation into the death of his wife, who was found dead in the rear tonneau of his automobile here yesterday afternoon. Clark told police the woman jumped from the car in the highway near Border City, and that he tried to take her to a hospital, but when his road was blocked by a train started for a physician in Waterloo. Examination disclosed the woman, who was about 40, had died from a fractured skull. Clark served a part of a 20-year term in Auburn Prison for the death of Anna May Russell on May 5, 1907. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter, first degree, at that time.

Oneida, July 22.— A death ascribed to depressive influence of extreme heat prevalent this week was reported today in the suicide of Mrs. Winnie Frederick, 48, wife of Jacob Frederick, a farmer at Madison, 20 miles south of Oneida. After hitting a child on the head with a hammer in her home, the woman screaming "I might as well kill myself; they'll kill me," ran into the cellar and drowned herself in water less than two feet deep in a cistern. Roy Nugent, 8, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Torry of Madison, the youngster hit with the hammer, will recover. It was a glancing blow and felled him, but so far as determined it caused no serious injury.

MADE HER WALK FOR MILES, DIVORCE PLEA CHICAGO, July 21. — Alleging among other things, that her husband had induced her to "walk miles through the snow of winter, and miles through the heat of summer" in search of a suitable home, invariably refusing to sign the lease when she made a selection, Mrs. Myrtle F. King of 6026 S. Paulina street, filed suit for divorce from William M. King. Mr. King is a stock broker and he is said to be a member of a wealthy and prominent New York family. In filing the divorce suit, Attorney Frank W. Derby obtained an injunction restraining the husband from removing any money from his bank accounts. Mrs. King set forth she and Mr. King were married in February 1920, and that he deserted her in May, 1925. During their married life, she charged, he constantly refused to provide a suitable home for her, and they lived in rooming houses, except when at her parents' home. Also, she charged, he continually assailed her for "social inferiority."

He was tapping a barrel in the cellar, he said, when Mrs. Izzo, a knife in her hand, threatened that "if he didn't stop talking about her she would cut him.""I grabbed a hammer that lay on a box nearby and when my wife lurched forward with the dagger, as though to pierce me with it, I struck for her shoulder, but hit her a glancing blow on the head knocking her to the floor. CINCINNATI POLICE TO CARRY CAMERAS CINCINNATI, Ohio, July 10.—Besides his usual equipment of "gat," billie and bracelet, every policeman of Cincinnati will soon be carrying a tiny camera, fitted with high-speed lens and capable of taking a picture in the tiniest fraction of a second. City Manager C. O. Sherrill has announced the latest addition to the accoutrement of the minions of the law. "Our memory often fails the best of us. A policeman must see everything in a very short time, for he very often has other duties to perform. With the camera recording indelibly on the film what the policeman sees, there will be less danger of contradicting the man who performs his duty," said Mr. Sherrill in making his announcement. City Manager Sherrill declares the cameras will be invaluable to the policeman when he has a case in court. "We will train every man to be a good amateur photographer, to work day or night, for he will carry flashlight powder as part of the equipment and we have every reason to believe the experiment will be a success," he said.
Wedding Is Staged Despite Threats Of Rejected Suitor New York, July 9 (AP)—After being guarded all night by a policeman against possible machinations of a rival suitor, Catherine F. Hoffman, 17 years old, and Daniel P. McKay, both of Staten Island, were married at Borough Hall, St. George. The guard was posted Tuesday night after the bride's mother complained she had received threats from George Lesky, the rejected suitor. Lesky, who is now held in $3,000 bail on an abduction charge, caused the postponement of the wedding on June 16, when he is alleged to have kidnaped the girl and held her by force for 10 days in a Bronx apartment. The wedding yesterday was without incident.

WIFE HELD IN DEATH, NEGROES MAY BE FREED Gadsden, Ala., July 8 (AP).—Inkling that four negroes convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of John Henry McClendon six years ago might have been the wrong parties to the crime was uncovered here when Mrs. Myrtle McClendon was jailed at Guntersville charged with killing her husband. Of the four negroes two died last year. The four included Cleo Staton, John Murchison, Jim Hutson and Will Crutcher. Authorities last night reported that Mrs. McClendon's daughter furnished the evidence which caused the woman's arrest.

Jap Ends Life to Free Bride as She Begs for AnnulmentLetter Found With Body Tells Sad Story of Racial Barrier.Evansville, Ind., July 7 ($\mathbb{P}$).—William Idi, 22, Japanese waiter, sacrificed his life that his white girl bride might be happy. His body was found in a gas filled room here last night. He had been dead apparently 10 days.Two weeks ago Idi and Gladys Hines, 19, were married. A letter found in the room told a tragic tale of the barrier between the Japanese and his white sweetheart."If you don't give me $100 to get the marriage annulled," it said, "I'll kill myself. Father said that if I married a Japanese, he would send both of us to jail. I don't want to go to jail, sweetheart, and would die by inches if I had to go."The annulment was granted by the Japanese himself and the gas wrote out the decree.

Deputy Sheriff John Bond heard the voices or excited spectators and, with George Crook and Arthur McWilliams, started to the rescue in an old flat-bottomed skiff. Morrow, climbing back into the boat, started to row away from the rescuers, and they had to go back and get a motor boat before they could catch him. In the meantime, both he and his woman friend had fallen overboard again, and they were in the water when Bond and his companions approached.
COUPLE PAYS $10 FINES FOR FIGHT TO AVOID RESCUE Hectic Boat Ride Comes as Climax to Holiday Celebration. Convicted of public intoxication after they had fought to get away from rescuers endeavoring to save them from drowning at Long Branch, John Morrow and Bessie Abbott, both of 517 Orange Street, were released from jail last night after paying fines of $10 each. Their arraignment before Justice Gibbons, Geddes, was a post-climax to the most thrilling rescue Long Branch has witnessed in many years, staged before a holiday crowd of 7,500 to 10,000 people.
Somebody Bit, but Wife Didn’t; Out for Divorce MRS. MARTHA BIESCAR was very much bothered. She couldn’t understand how her husband could be bitten on the arm playing a game of poker with men friends. Mrs. Biescar was so much bothered that she began a searching investigation. What she learned satisfied her that she was a neglected wife and the state of her husband’s inebriety caused him, she said, to turn cave man and “beat her up.” Her findings were incorporated in a suit for divorce on file yesterday in Superior Court on the ground of cruel and inhuman treatment. One night when her husband, Louis A. Biescar, returned from an automobile ride when she was left at home, she found, she said, a telltale powderpuff and a feminine lipstick in his car. When she asked “How come?” she said, her husband replied in an unconvincing manner. Then came the bite on his arm. Mrs. Biescar also was inquisitive about that. With an easy smile and a disarming gesture, Biescar assured her that he got that wound when he got “stuck” at a poker party with male friends. The Biescars were married in June, 1922, and separated June 4, last. They have one child, the complaint stated. Attorney Albert Sidney Brown represents the wife.

Syracuse Herald 11/29/1957 Father of 8 Sent To Attica for Rape The father of eight children was sentenced in County Court today to Attica State Prison for one and one-half to three years for raping a teen-aged girl. [Left Column] Sentencing of John Donath, 47, of 203 Galster Ave. was one of 11 cases before County Judge Leo W. Breed this morning. Donath had previously pleaded guilty to second degree rape involving a 13-year-old child on June 22.

Newspaper story from Syracuse Herald. Police Baseball Players Riot and Bat Heads Instead of Ball Umpire, Carried Off Field, Wakes Long Enough to Forfeit Game. Chicago, July 1—Police teams from the Shakespeare station and Chicago Avenue station played a baseball game yesterday that ended in a riot. The umpire was knocked senseless and with one spectator carried to a hospital. Edward Kane, member of the Umpires' Association, was the arbiter. He declared a long hit by a Shakespeare player, that was supposed to be a homer, foul. That started trouble. Later he ruled a Shakespeare man had not touched second on a sprint home. With the score 4 to 2 in favor of Shakespeare in the seventh, Kane called a Chicago Avenue hit fair. It had landed near the foul line. He was knocked flat by a Shakespeare player and did not revive for 15 minutes. A majority of the police players then attacked one another. Masks and bats were used. A riot call was sent in. John Conklin, a druggist, said the "umpire got what was coming to him." Someone hit him and he was carried away on a stretcher. Just before going to the hospital the umpire woke up and declared the game forfeited to Chicago Avenue. Chief of Police Collins has been called upon to investigate.

Henry Vivlemore of Syracuse may cause a jail sentence on a charge of bigamy for Mrs. Margaret L. Symonds, 22, of Watertown, who admits she has been married three times. Mrs. Symonds was arrested in Watertown upon the complaint of her third husband, Frank Symonds, who is employed at Madison Barracks. When arraigned in Police Court before City Judge J. A. McConnell she entered a plea of not guilty. She was held under bonds of $500 for an examination Friday, July 23. Symonds declared he married the woman Aug. 2, 1925, and that she did not tell him of Vivlemore, her "other husband." The accused woman, according to dispatches from Watertown, freely discussed her plight. She said she was married to Robert Newman in July, 1918. He lived only three months after the wedding. On June 30, 1920, Mrs. Symonds declared she married Vivlemore. She has not heard from him since shortly after that time, she asserted, and had good reason to believe him dead. Symonds, while seeking evidence to divorce his wife, communicated with Chief Cadin, who declared Vivlemore had a police record.

Between them lay a pistol with two empty shells. The three servants had heard the young couple quarrelling earlier in the evening, and when they heard two shots, ran to the bedroom to find both dead. No immediate cause for the quarrel could be learned, but the Brewsters were said to have quarrelled frequently.
