Addendum (7/11/26): The "how do we define retro" discourse popped up on Bluesky again and I came across this frankly extremely thoughtful post by the user animal jayson who says: he settles it forever: "retro" refers to a specific time period which was defined in the ps3 era. the bar for what is considered "retro" does not move forward as time passes. it's comparable to "modernist" literature, the name being temporal doesn't mean it changes over time, it's just a name. and it's just like, wow, yeah, that's it. "Retro" as we've come to know it in gaming is pretty specifically associated with pixel art/low poly aesthetics, alongside specific design philosophies (plug in a game and play it, no updates/DLC), game mechanics (losing all your lives means you start over from the beginning), and genre conventions (top down RPGs, 2D platformers, beat-em-ups, etc). In that sense it is an artistic movement within video gaming with its own conventions that people may call upon when creating new video games or even video game hardware, hence why sometimes even new things are described as "retro" (again, like the actual original meaning of the word). At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter, I guess. Typically when people say stuff like "retro gaming" it just means playing old video games. I also never actually branded this blog as a specifically retro gaming blog outside of this post, haha.

The plot may be uninspiring, but Virtual Hydlide promises to offer players RPG elements harking back to the Ultima Underworld series. The characters develop as the story progresses, there's a variety of objects and creatures with which to interact, and Jim can run as well as walk through his environment. Although the game resembles Elite's recent 3DO and PC title, Virtuoso, the game is certain to be much deeper and more involving. It's encouraging to see that third party developers are as keen to venture into 3D territory as Sega itself. Hydlide's reputation alone will ensure that the Saturn version whips up a significant degree of interest in Japan, and its universally appealing presentation makes a Western release seem inevitable.

Phantasy Star Fukkokuban Phantasy Star Fukkokuban is a revised version of the Master System game on a Mega Drive cartridge. Seven years after the original game hit store shelves and only a few months after the release of the fourth game, Sega ran a Japanese promotional campaign known as Explore the Roots of Phantasy Star. As part of the campaign, the company introduced Phantasy Star Fukkokuban (ファンタシースター 復刻版, lit. "Phantasy Star Reprint"), a revised version of Phantasy Star on a Mega Drive cartridge, and gave away 2000 copies as part of an official lottery.[20] The interest generated by the lottery later led Sega to give it a commercial release exclusively in Japan on April 2, 1994.[3] The version given away in the lottery is identical to the commercial release with the exception of a letter addressed to the winners.[20] This rerelease features a unique revision of the game,[21] likely incorporating the bug fixes implemented in Phantasy Star's localized Master System release[22] and boasting support for the Mega Drive Control Pad's C and START buttons.[23][24] Internally, the rerelease consists of the Master System game on a Mega Drive PCB with a programmable logic array to account for firmware differences (a setup also found in the Power Base Converter)[21] and the appropriate connector pin to signal Master System compatibility mode changed accordingly.[25]

Do NOT pass the fans of the 1998 Sega Saturn Rogue-Type RPG "BAROQUE" the aux They'll just start playin' A song made from nothing but sound effects. I only used the S3000XL because it was entirely sampling work. I wanted to try making a collage of industrial sounds. It's mostly processed sounds of factory and construction machinery. However it was supposed to evoke a memory from before the Great Heat Wave and I wanted to incorporate some kind of human element, so I added the sounds of demonstrators hitting an iron pipe in the streets - changing the pitch and pan using an LFO to evoke the feeling of a mental realization. The voice that occasionally comes in is an announcement at a concert venue played in reverse with a distortion applied and converted into a waveform using the S3000XL.

The Wall Street Journal reported on May 1 that GameStop has quietly been buying eBay shares and is currently preparing an offer to acquire the publicly traded company. We don't know the potential acquisition price, but eBay's market value is currently around $46 billion. This acquisition would be a big swing for GameStop, which has a comparatively smaller market value of $12 billion. That said, this action would align with another WSJ report from earlier in the year about GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen's plan to make a massive deal to drive GameStop's market value above $100 billion and earn a $35 billion payday.

Steam is genuinely useful in a lot of ways and people generally want all their stuff in one place. You need something Steam doesn't have to convince people to jump to something else. SeeroftheNight ‪@seerofthe.net‬ I think GOG is a good example, while much smaller, they've carved out their own niche of offering older games that Steam doesn't have and offering everything DRM free.
