The cheap model fallback has borders. U.S. companies are using Chinese AI models because they are cheaper and increasingly good. Reuters now reports Beijing is discussing whether the best future Chinese models should stay harder to reach from abroad.

CNBC’s useful number: Chinese models used by U.S. companies through OpenRouter have stayed above 30% of tokens every week since Feb. 8, peaking at 46%. The prior 12-month average was 11%. This is not ideological adoption. It is cost pressure.
