Laura Nader As the first woman tenured by the UC Berkeley Anthropology department, Laura Nader had an extensive impact on the University’s history and culture. She joined the faculty in 1960, the same year Herma Hill Kay started at Berkeley Law. Nader published ten books and around 290 other publications over the course of her career. As an influential and popular professor at UC Berkeley, she taught thousands of undergraduate students and supervised more than one-hundred PhD students. She recounted one of these popular classes in her oral history interview: “I puzzled because I never really understood why do students love the course Controlling Processes so much? Why do they remember it? Like the woman who said, ‘I took a course from you ten years ago.’ And I said, ‘You remember it?’ And she said, ‘Yes, it was Controlling Processes.’ Why do they remember it? They don’t remember any courses from one semester to another; who taught it and whatever it is. Their memories are worse than seventy-five year olds. So it opens their eyes to something. But why are our eyes closed? Saudi Arabia suspended U.S. access to Prince Sultan Air Base and Saudi airspace after being blindsided by the announcement, and a subsequent call between Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman failed to resolve the dispute, NBC News reported. Kuwait similarly cut off access, basing, and overflight rights, a U.S. administration official confirmed to Drop Site. Qatar was contacted only after the operation had already begun, and Oman was not informed until after Trump’s public announcement. Without Saudi and Kuwaiti airspace, U.S. aircraft could not maintain the defensive umbrella required to protect ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, making the operational pause effectively unavoidable.

I’m an IT Manager in Higher Ed. For the last few years, we’ve had a revolving door when it comes to support technicians. My hands are tied as far as the salary I can offer but basically it’s below 20/hr. I’m seeing a trend in the younger generations where they will work for 6 months to a year and move on. Yes I realize that paying them more will probably fix (for the most part) this situation, but HR and the VPFA will not let that happen. They pretty much told me this is a ‘1-2 year position’. That really pisses me off because they don’t seem to care about all the time it takes to find someone, hire them and train them. That alone is a 6 month process. And then they only stay for a few months after that because they found a higher paying job elsewhere. Has anyone else been in this situation? My frustration is boiling over and I don’t know what to do anymore.
