Let's Rally! Phase Two of Seattle's Comprehensive Plan is in progress, and the Complete Communities Coalition (CCC) is hosting a rally outside City Hall before we tell City Council what we're fighting for: a more affordable Seattle, with more housing, parks, and public transit for all. This phase of the Comprehensive Plan is focused on upzoning in Neighborhood Centers and Transit Corridors in line with what the Office of Planning and Community Development has produced. However, the CCC believes we can and should improve upon what's been designed, and go farther to not just promote more housing, but protect trees, our waterways, and so much more.

WHEEL/Women in Black will be standing vigil on the steps of City Hall (4th/James) from noon to 1 PM Wednesday, March 25th for TWENTY more of our brothers and sisters who died unsheltered, in public, or by violence. The City of Seattle City Council is considering approving renewal of the franchise agreement with Comcast for another 7 years, along with a side agreement. These have provided important digital equity benefits for residents and community organizations assisting residents. A public hearing is being held this Thursday, March 12th at 9:30 a.m., The City Council Government and Utilities Committee is holding a public hearing, briefing and possible vote. The agenda with link to agreement documents is here. It is possible to participate remotely or in-person. Info on the agenda. There is also a public notice of hearing here with info on how to contact the Council. Joy Hollingsworth is Chair of this Committee.

Homelessness & Stability • Shift from a sweeps heavy policy to service- rich approaches, providing stability & dignity for unhoused residents. • Centralize service navigation to reduce confusion & improve outcomes. • Ensure emergency housing meets safety, accessibility, & trauma-informed standards, especially for disabled, LGBTQ+, & youth populations. • Focus on prevention, including eviction protection, rental assistance, & rapid re- housing options. Early Wins • Create “safe zones” with hygiene services, garbage removal, phone charging stations, & concentrated case management. • Increase shelter safety, cleanliness, secure storage, & trauma-informed staffing. • Pilot disability- & LGBTQ-specific shelter options. • Coordinate outreach, housing placement, & Unified Care Team to prevent displacement without options. • Centralize shelter & service navigation system for clarity & accessibility.

OR passes tax disconnect, saves $291 million Oregon Capital Chronicle reports that the Oregon legislature passed SB 1507, which will disconnect the state's income tax from the federal tax code for a year and a half. By refusing to automatically apply federal tax rate cuts passed last year, the state will prevent $291 million in lost revenue. OR governor Tina Kotek is expected to sign the measure. Meanwhile, Washington state Democrats are planning up to half a billion in cuts to childcare subsidies for low income families – maybe they shouldn't have tucked a bunch of sales tax and business tax cuts in that millionaires' tax bill they passed. So, just looked at my property taxes for King County for my single family bungalow built in 1912 in Wallingford. The amount due is $1,500 more than last year. My grandfather bought the bungalow in 1941 for, guess what, $1,500. Taxes are insane but guess that's the way it is to live in the most wonderful place to have grown up and lived in.
