Rovin, who had previously penned the official novelization for "Cliffhanger" (1993) and an unauthorized biography of Sylvester Stallone, conceptualized the project specifically as a starring vehicle for Stallone. The narrative centered on a pack of prehistoric saber-toothed tigers awakened from an ancient ice-age sinkhole by climatic shifts caused by an El Niño hurricane. The apex predators subsequently rampaged through the wilderness before invading Los Angeles. Stallone was attached to portray Jim Grand, an anthropologist who seeks to capture the creatures alive to preserve the evolutionary link to the past, clashing with a local sheriff determined to exterminate them. Universal Pictures ultimately abandoned development on the action-horror project following the poor box office performance of "D-Tox" (2002) and other contemporary Stallone features. Rovin subsequently adapted his unproduced screenplay into a standalone thriller novel of the same name.
