It doesn't matter that anything that gets people out of their cars helps those who still drive. Keeping people divided is useful for some political interests, but it doesn't help any of us get around any quicker or reduce traffic. We should resist being forced into a specific identity: we're all just commuters, in it together, but using different kinds of transportation. Embracing an identity is understandable, however, when the simple act of safely getting around Toronto in particular ways under threat. There's Premier Ford's determination to remove bike lanes. That it's a fight to get and then keep basic safe infrastructure will certainly evoke a feeling of being specifically targeted. Also consider incidents like the one in late May, where Toronto police tackled a cyclist on Queens Quay West who they say ran through a stop sign during a ticketing blitz and refused to stop for police. Imagine for a second Toronto Police ripping drivers out of their vehicles — far heavier and more dangerous than a bike — and tackling them to the ground for doing the same thing. There would be, at minimum, hundreds of such takedowns at every stop sign across the city all day long.

IMAGINING TORONTO marinas, crowded urban beaches, lakewater filtration infrastructure and ongoing condominium construction boom reflect Toronto s origins as a maritime city and its continuing orientation toward the lake. Every time we take a sip of tap water, shiver in the climate-controlled chill of a downtown office tower or watch a rainstorm round the western curve of the lake, we are reminded of its significance to the city. As Chris Chambers writes in "Greatest Hits of Drinking Water" (from Lake Where No One Swims,) "I saw it moving north somehow defying gravity / through an underground grid, a network of pipes, / like a sys. tem of locks beneath streets; / the hydrating veins of Toronto." As Chambers suggests, long after we turned our collective backs to it, the lake has continued to move through us, nourishing and replenishing the city with its water. In The Measure of the Rule, Robert Barr describes a nineteenth-century visitor's first impression of a city whose horizon was still dominated by the islands and the immense curve of the lake: I stood for a moment, and gazed down past the Union Station to the great lake upon whose shore the city stood.
