Over and over again, Jimmy Olsen #10 reiterates the two core truths of Jimmy Olsen: Jimmy Olsen is constantly changing Paradoxically, the irreducible Jimmy never changes And thus is the core tension of the issue established. If Jimmy Olsen is a constantly changing being (and he is, as any fule kno), Jimmy Olsen is defined only by what he is not. He is not, for example, a good reporter or a good brother or a good sham husband. He is trying very hard to be a good friend to Superman by not leaning on him to resolve his wacky exaggerated everyday problems so much, which suggests that until this point he was not (or at least didn’t think he was) a good friend to Superman.

The armor is the addiction, the easy answer to life’s problems. Everytime Tony is faced with making a difficult decision about who he is, he retreats into the metal shell. His suit frees him from obligations, from consequences, and shields him in anonymity. Afterall, what does Tony say Iron Man is to the public? His bodyguard, his metaphorical and literal defense mechanism. The Iron Man armor is ultimately just a bigger roomba: a device that’s very function and existence requires you to change some part of how you live. Use it often enough, and it changes who you are entirely. You may have heard the expression that if you hold a hammer long enough everything starts to look like a nail. Well what if you hold a hammer so long that you confuse it for your own arm?
