I am writing to express, in the strongest possible terms, my utter dismay at your statement issued today. Our country is threatened with what may amount to the gravest threat to our economic well-being in almost a century, not to mention the stated threats to our physical sovereignty and security, from the incoming US administration. These threats will not affect us as Albertans, Ontarians, or Newfoundlanders, but as Canadians. This threat is being met, as it must be, by our federal government. And while you may find their response inadequate or politically distasteful, that gives you no authority to speak on behalf of anyone in an international forum. In this matter you, too, are Canadian first. Yet you have seen fit to undertake rogue diplomacy, meeting with the incoming president without coordination with the federal government, on the flimsy pretense that you were "on vacation." You have taken positions at odds with the federal government, exposing divisions which only play into the hands of a hostile US administration. And now you are publicly undercutting the coordinated response to this crisis, supported by all other Premiers. At the time when we need to be acting as a nation, putting ALL options on the table, you are publicly withholding support for one of the most powerful strategies possible. You are promoting the interests of one province ahead of the interests of Canada.
