The case closed with satisfying clicks as he ran his thumbs over the clasps, forcing them to lock in place one by one. Safe. His violin was, finally, properly safe. Avel threw his head back for a moment, took a deep breath, then fumbled for his jacket. The theater manager had joined them to hover. “Would you like us to call you a cab?” Avel stood again, throwing his jacket over the arm on his cane and hooking the other hand around his violin case. “Please.” The manager nodded. “Are you quite certain you’re all right? Not to intrude, Mr. Martins, but you still look quite weak. One of us can accompany you if—” Avel held back his grimace. “No need.
