Note that the Equality Act makes specific provisions recognising that a tendency to physical or sexual abuse of other persons, exhibitionism and voyeurism are behaviours which do not need to be tolerated at work. It is well-recognised in the medical literature that for some people (predominantly male), transgender identification can be linked to a paraphilia or sexual fetish such as autogynephilia, exhibitionism or interest in non-consensual sexual activity. However, the more pressing and important challenges - the questions which Starmer and Labour should be trying to answer - are how to change the reputation, perceptions, and general atmosphere that surround this Labour party in government. How to change the story that is being written about them? That will require far more work than changing position(s) on policy issues.

Let me begin by saying that I firmly believe that this debate deserves dignity, respect, and compassion, and too often in modern politics these values have been lost. Transgender and non-binary people face daily struggles for acceptance and tolerance, and it is up to us as elected officials to avoid divisive and insensitive rhetoric. With regard to the specific issue of puberty blockers, it is my view that their use should be guided by medical professionals rather than politicians. I also welcome plans for better research on trans healthcare so that we can ensure every trans person receives the very highest standards of care. More broadly, I unequivocally stand for the rights of transgender people and the wider LGBTQ+ community. Previously, I have hosted roundtables between LGBTQ+ charities and mental health organisations and I will continue to be a steadfast ally. Dr Allin-Khan
