An orphan boy befriends a wolf in a sheep-farming peasant world. The dramatic consequences include a non-fantasy portal to an alien land, captivity at the hands of a ruthless baron, interplay between a holy crone and a demonic bandit. All travel down a great river, which hosts a violent denouement.
