This is so confusing. Did Anthropic really just drop Claude Code from their $20/month plan? Why would they do that through a pricing page update without making a proper announcement? Plus, $20/month still gets you Cowork, which is really just Claude Code wearing a non-threatening hat!

Interesting move 🤔

Functionally, yes; behaviourally, no? I would expect Claude code users to be more likely to tokenmaxx

Simon Batistoni · Apr 22

I bet the “non threatening hat” version burns WAY fewer tokens per user just by being pitched differently. :) I also suspect CoWork will start to demur on coding questions, if Anthropic are really starting to reign in their burn rate

David Buchanan · Apr 21

Maybe they're just gearing up for the announcement, but I really hope not! My non-work usage of CC does not justify a >$20 price tag so I'd drop it.

Thats weird. Here I see Claude Code is included for Pro users. claude.com/pricing

Except Cowork is a token drain. That was also a mind game experiment to see if people would still pay for it.

In my opinion, $20pm is great value for money (for developers), so I wouldn’t be surprised by the price change. But yeah they should have communicated better - I imagine a lot of Claude code users are now taking a closer look at local-running models right now.

Someone from Anthropic says this, which I do not find clarifying at all twitter.com/theamolavasa...

Uncle Frank · Apr 22

Because Anthropic can’t communicate worth a damn.

@jayge-e.bsky.social · Apr 27

They did this as an A-B test.

The Cowork rename is the tell. They are trying to separate the brand from the scary agentic connotations without actually changing what the product does. The pricing confusion is a symptom of not wanting to say what they are actually building.

Crazy to do it that way. I don’t know how much use someone could have gotten out of Claude Code at the 20/month plan though. I’m starting to hit limits with 20x Max plan now.

x.com/TheAmolAvasa... "For clarity, we're running a small test on ~2% of new prosumer signups. Existing Pro and Max subscribers aren't affected."
