Having had his consciousness trapped after his death by the scientist Maddox and experimented on to produce a new race of artificial beings, Data asks his friend Picard to let his consciousness die. It is a horrible thing to have happened to a beloved TNG character, and in my view badly misjudged. Previously in the series, Icheb, one of the Borg children rescued by the crew of Voyager, is gruesomely vivisected.

It's a pretty good day for him.

He is also a Sith Lord and secretly manipulating both sides of the conflict to destroy the Jedi and the status quo.
