Find out what they want to do next session. At the end of every session, ask them what they want to do next. This is absolutely crucial for saving yourself time and wasted effort and ensuring that the entire group is on the same page about the next session’s general plan. They might choose to bite on a hook you’ve thrown out to them or come up with their own idea, but you need to know what kind of content to make for the next session. In a sandbox campaign, you only ever need to be one session ahead of the players. You don’t need to plot out vast narratives or design lands the PCs might someday reach; all you need to know is what they want to do next time, and then make your preparations accordingly. Remember, if you don’t need it for the next session, and you’re not having fun making it, stop working on it.

FLEEING THE CONFLICT If you’re losing a fight, it might be better to re- treat and perhaps return with back- up. If you want to leave the conflict immediately, and you don’t have any enemies at ARM’S LENGTH, you can roll for MOVE – a successful roll means you man- age to get away somehow, and the conflict is over. You cannot FLEE in this way if you are trapped or surrounded. The GM has final say. You cannot use your roll to move past an op- ponent – you must FLEE in the same direction you came from. The GM can modify your roll depending on the terrain and the distance to the nearest opponent, see the table below. FLEEING RANGE MODIFICATION Near −1 Short 0 Long +1 Open Zone −1 Rough Zone +1 If the roll fails, you remain in combat with your opponent and cannot get away – you re- main at the same distance as you were before. The GM can also inflict some additional nega- tive consequence for you (see page 43). You can attempt to FLEE again in the next round.
