I’m a customer who frequently uses Stripe through services like itch.io, and I’m lodging a complaint about Stripe’s ongoing, over-reaching restrictions on sales for legal, legitimate businesses. Recently, Stripe has come under pressure from conservative, anti-LGBT hate groups like Collective Shout (based in Australia) to restrict the sale of any and all adult-oriented content, not just in Australia, but internationally. (https://www.rascal.news/itch-io-delists-bans-games-under-pressure-from-payment-processors-and-an-australian-anti-porn-group/) Not only is the sale of this content perfectly legal, but to restrict it in this manner flies in the face of freedom of speech and freedom of expression, and harms not just small, independent artists who may be your clients, and their consumer base, but also your company’s bottom line. The following actions are absolutely necessary to protect the freedoms of your client base and the sustainability of legitimate business practices: 1. Remove from your Terms of Service any mention barring the use of your service for sale and purchase of legal products. 2. Contact Steam (Valve), Itch.io, and any other company you have previously put pressure on to retract your content restrictions. 3. Put in place protections to prevent such restrictions from being put in place in the future without ample warning and time to contest them. If these actions are not taken, then I, along with many others, will have to take our business to your competitors, instead.
