Ron DeSantis was a 27-year-old Navy lawyer fresh out of Harvard Law School when he arrived in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, amid an escalating crisis at the U.S. military base. Hundreds of “enemy combatants,” held without charges, had gone on hunger strikes. As pressure grew to end the protests, DeSantis later said, he was part of a team of military lawyers asked what could be done. “How do I combat this?” a commanding officer asked in 2006, as DeSantis recalled in an interview he gave years later to a local CBS television station. “Hey, you actually can force-feed,” DeSantis said he responded in his role as a legal adviser. “Here’s what you can do. Here’s kind of the rules for that.”
Vance entered the White House as a man full of ideas—about a more modest place for the United States in world affairs; a new, worker-friendly version of Republican economics; and aggressive, Teddy Roosevelt–style regulation of Big Business. Yeah, you know, look, I don’t know Donald Trump. I’ve never met the man. All I meant, Congressman, is we’re putting the war in the hands of two people, and I asked you if you think that they would care about a girl’s school being bombed, and you— Yeah. I mean, but again, I would certainly hope. But the people who are making these decisions, the folks who are on the ground actually executing these decisions, I believe they do care. And yeah, they care. And yeah, they care.
I’m not sure how targeted it has been. Israel recently said that it dropped more bombs in the past three days than it dropped in the Twelve-Day War against Iran in June. Trump has promised that bigger strikes are coming. There have already been civilian casualties. Americans have already lost their lives. This is the biggest story in the world. Oh, sure. I’m not downplaying it at all. It’s a very big deal. I’m just saying that the strikes have been focussed, I believe, entirely on military assets.

They paint a picture that is more Police Academy (or even Reno 911!) than a Gestapo on the march. Yes, they agree that Washington is a huge problem and are uncomfortable with the mission creep that is taking them away from actual immigration enforcement. But internally? Theirs is also a story of gung-ho 19-year-olds, drunken stakeouts, and senior officers disappearing into meetings and all of a sudden needing time off.
Today I'm taking action to bring accountability to federal law enforcement like ICE. New legislation I'm announcing will require ICE to adopt rigorous training hiring standards, and for their agents to wear body cameras. These are best practices used by law enforcement agencies use across our country. We need to bring transparency and accountability to ICE in order to make Americans safer.
For example, the officers who killed George Floyd wore body cameras, but it was video shot by Darnella Frazier (who was 17 at the time) that showed Floyd’s horrid final moments, and exploded into the world’s consciousness. Without Frazier’s video, Floyd’s death would have been buried in the hollow language of a press release: “(Floyd) was ordered to step from his car,” according to the news release from the Minneapolis Police Department. “After he got out, he physically resisted officers. Officers were able to get the suspect in handcuffs and noted he appeared to be suffering medical distress… He died a short time later.”
Additionally, whether law enforcement releases dashcam or body camera footage, and how much of the video they choose to release, varies between states and jurisdictions. Police in Minneapolis, for instance, released body camera footage of officers' fatal encounter with Floyd, but it was heavily redacted. It's very rare for police to face prosecutions generally, White said, even with the use of body cameras. But in a few high-profile cases, body camera footage has been used against officers in trials that led to convictions. In 2018, a former officer in Texas was convicted of killing 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. In the 2014 shooting of Laquan McDonald in Chicago, four officers were fired and one was convicted of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery after dash cam video showed McDonald walking away from the officers, conflicting with an officer's claims that he was advancing toward him with a knife.
And since boycotting the Kennedy Center has costs--some of the patrons who don't show up now will get out of the habit of going to the theater and be less likely to attend future performances--I'd like to hear some discussion of whether the tradeoff is worth it
From the opening on, this documentary is frank about the appeal of “To Catch a Predator,” even as it is interrogating it. How important was it to preserve the draw of the show in the documentary? I had to build that into the movie. Some could read this movie as an indictment of the audience, but the first person who gets indicted is me: the filmmaker. I couldn’t ask an audience to consider their own agency consuming true crime unless I was asking an audience to consider the ethical approach of making this film. Are the predator hunters and me that different? I’m not sure. We both are incentivized to make our stories more engaging to get more people to watch. This documentary is often doing the same thing that “To Catch a Predator” is doing. If you have a problem with one, where do you decide where that problem ends when it comes to the other?

As Republicans jostle for Mr. Trump’s mantle, they may be tempted to court the Groyper fringe to bolster a right-wing coalition that includes the furthest reaches of nationalist populism. Or they could pivot back to a much less ideological middle.

A few months later, Senator Eric Schmitt, Republican of Missouri, was more explicit in a speech before the National Conservatism Conference in Washington, where he lamented that a “few lines in a poem on the Statue of Liberty and five words about equality in the Declaration of Independence” led to unfettered immigration and multiculturalism. “We Americans,” he said, “are the sons and daughters of the Christian pilgrims that poured out from Europe’s shores to baptize a new world in their ancient faith.”
The assassination of Charlie Kirk also left a power vacuum on the right that has set off a scramble among its more extreme elements. Though Mr. Kirk had made his share of insensitive remarks, he tried to hold the followers of Mr. Fuentes at bay in his own youth organization, Turning Point USA. Mr. Fuentes often antagonized Mr. Kirk, calling him an “idiot” and worse.
Mr. Fuentes and his explicit bigotry have been causing the Republican Party heartburn for years, including when Mr. Trump dined with him and the rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, at Mar-a-Lago in 2022. Now, as Mr. Cruz put it, the G.O.P. faces a time of choosing.
For much of President Trump’s second term, the political heirs of his “America First” agenda have tried to form an intellectual framework for their movement that embraces nationalism while keeping overt bigotry out of the coalition.
