Plain, simple, Cin Australian non-binary nerd, 27-year veteran of the IT industry, former Microsoftie, life-long space enthusiast who actually got to work with rockets for a little while.

Frogs - or dyirrigurat in Ngunnawal - are vital to healthy ecosystems. Sadly, many species are threatened by the invasive chytrid fungus, which causes the disease chytridiomycosis. This fungus has caused declines in hundreds of species, including the green and golden bell frog, a species once common in the ACT but no longer here. Chytrid fungus doesn't cope well with warm temperatures (above 28 degrees C) or slightly salty water. Fortunately, many native frogs, like the green and golden bell frog, can handle both. Could we take advantage of this to help frogs? A trip to the spa By providing refugia - safe zones from chytrid - researches at the University of Canberra are bringing the green and golden bell frogs back to Canberra. At 15 locations across the city, we are testing how a spa day, which includes a visit to a hot frog sauna and a soak in a salty plunge pool, as well as immunising frogs against the disease, can help them to survive in the presence of chytrid fungus.
