To the editor, A decade ago, I wrote a letter stating that the city's snow removal policies are out of date. Here we are in 2025 and things are not better. They are arguably worse. The city needs to be better. The street plowing plan was not good enough. Del Ray residents were rightfully angered that the city ignored the entire neighborhood until three days after the storm ended. A plan that does not include everyone is not a real plan. In addition, it is time for the city to end its charade regarding shoveling sidewalks in parks and most public spaces. If the resources aren’t there, then stop pretending it’s part of the plan. This is the kind of poor governance that erodes confidence in government, regardless of political affiliation. Residents also need to be better. Clearing sidewalks within 12 hours of a storm is a basic courtesy to neighbors, regardless of what city code says or whether you are a business, non-profit, or resident. Meanwhile, I encourage those of you who can to look beyond your own property line. Don't wait for someone else to do it – grab a shovel and help out, the sooner the better. When we wait for someone else to do it, we risk of the kind of refreeze we had this week that makes future efforts exponentially harder. We love to talk about how great a city Alexandria is or how strong a community its individual neighborhoods are. Being better about handling our rare snowstorms would go a long way towards proving that point. Jeff Yutzler

West St. and Queen St. Queen is two lanes one way with parallel parking on both sides.

The intersection of Commonwealth Ave. and King St., southbound from the north exit of the King St. Metro station. A "BIKE ROUTE" sign adorns the right sidewalk, but there is no reasonable way to bike here.
Jeff Yutzler @slarjy · Aug 12 Since @AlexandriaVAGov / @AlexandriaVATES doesn't provide safe cycling infrastructure between really any two points of interest in the city, I ended up filing another near miss report with @alxsafestreets from escorting my child to camp at a city recreational center. What's extra dangerous about this crosswalk is that both times, the driver in the near lane yielded correctly but the one in the far lane didn't. Engineering notwithstanding, perhaps @AlexandriaVAPD should take a look.

The eastern end of Braddock Rd., approaching West St. as the bike lane ends and how to proceed safely is unclear.
The southern end of the Potomac Yard Trail, at the crosswalk of Braddock Rd., near the Metro station.
E. Luray Ave. should be part of the bike network.

Mount Vernon Ave. is busy and too narrow to accommodate cars, parking, pedestrian crossings, and bikes.
