To support #2 - Oliver Cromwell's conquest of Ireland led to Irish indentured servants across Jamaica, Barbados, and elsewhere. Colonists used a new term - white - instead of christian to distinguish indentured servants from (christianized) enslaved blacks to remove ambiguity of rights between them.
