There were older kids in my brother's class, and they considered me the immature kid brother who was just experimenting with style. Dead Rat Randy was the archetype of a gutter punk. He was exceedingly homely looking and had grizzled facial hair and a snarling countenance all the time. He was way ahead of his time and he even had a go at being a musician for a while. But we never got along or hung out together. Another guy named Karl was interested in talking about punk. He was a bass player who never cut his long curly hair and listened to Stiv Bators and the Dead Boys. We connected on the level of musical taste, but he was also on the lunatic fringe of conspiracy theories, which he loved to discuss. He believed that our president at the time, Jimmy Carter, was a religious fanatic who hated punk rock. In fact, Karl believed that Carter had a secret agenda to eliminate punk rock from American society entirely, going so far as to ban record stores and radio stations that played or sold punk music. He was a fan of the Republican candidate Ronald Reagan because, according to Karl, Reagan loved punk music and was willing to support punk bands that were industrious and those that exemplified a true DIY ethic, which was more in keeping with the American conservative spirit.
