I have a feeling James Gunn wanted to do a more faithful adaptation of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but WB‘s higher-ups saw how much it would cost and said, “Fuck no!” The art is one of the best things about that story, and it would probably cost a lot to adapt that in a live-action movie.
