In 1872, the Christ Church College Cathedral belfry showed damages which made it necessary to rehouse its bells elsewhere. Driven by Dean Henry George Liddel, the New Belfry project started in 1872. The new bell tower was to be placed at the top right corner of Tom Quad, above the staircase to the dining hall. Alas, money run out and a very simple big wooden cube served as the new temporary belfry. It was so simple that C.L. Dodgson associated it with, among other shapes, a new design pattern for bonnet-boxes and bathing-machines. Later that economy belfry shyly went into hiding behind the walls of George Frederick Bodley’s belfry built from 1876 to 1879. Inside the belfry the wooden structure still can be seen. An excerpt from Dodgson’s Oxford squib The New Belfry of Christ Church where “Bathing-machines” are mentioned: «§ 7. On the impetus given to Art in England by the new Belfry, Ch. Ch. The idea has spread far and wide, and is rapidly pervading all branches of manufacture. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought ‘42 will do.’ I typed it out. End of story. That said (by the author himself!), did Adams know after the number 42 popped up in his head that Lewis Carroll used that number in his Alice books and in The Hunting of the Snark? Might he have enjoyed the thought, that some readers would interpret the 42 as a nod to Carroll?

In 2004 he interpreted the starry night sky in Henry Holiday’s front cover illustration to Lewis Carroll’s “The Hunting of the Snark” (1876) as a map, where the white clouds represented land with rivers. I liked the suggestion, but did not find any real-world map to which Holiday might have alluded. Holiday engraved that illustration himself. I discovered John Tufail’s paper in 2009. Only today, after 15 years, I got the idea to compress and flip a large segment of a map of the British isles vertically. That’s my “slowness in taking a jest”. You see the result. Sadly, I can’t tell John that anymore. I appreciated his guidance a lot. The white clouds weren’t the land, but as for a map having been hidden in the illustration, John was right.

But I assume that he knew Henry Holiday’s illustration to the chapter The Baker’s Tale in Carroll’s tragicomedy. Or Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas, the screenwriters of the Return of the Jedi (1983), got the idea to allude to the Snark. Or they just added one more variant of the many scenes to their movie, where a dying old man at the end of his life passes important knowledge to a young man. Last not least, the similarities just could be incidental.

"It is possible that the author was half-consciously laying a trap, so readily did he take to the inventing of puzzles and things enigmatic; but to those who knew the man, or who have divined him correctly through his writings, the explanation is fairly simple. Mr.Dodgson had a mathematical, a logical, and a philosophical mind; and when these qualities are united to a love of the grotesque, the resultant fancies are sure to have a quite peculiar charm, a charm so much the greater because its source is subtle and eludes all attempts to grasp it." "They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care, They pursued it with forks and hope" is a mixing up of two meanings of the word "with". As if this was not enough, Henry Holiday added a third meaning by personifying Hope and Care. Carroll liked that. (2) The Boots, a maker of Bonnets and Hoods. (A correct non-sequential interlaced portmanteau can be built from Bonnets and Hoods. To keep things simple, let’s focus on the portmanteau issue. It doesn’t threaten your life to claim that that Boots might be a bootblack, and also undeniably is a portmanteau for Bonnets+Hoods: If you cannot verify that yourself, run $ an -w -m 5 "bonnets hoods" | grep "^b" | grep -v "'" | sort under BSD or Linux etc., and you’ll see that boots is among the generated portmanteaus (bends, bents, besot, besots, bests, bodes, bonds, boned, bones, booed, boons, boost, boosted, boosts, booted, booth, booths, boots, bossed), which all are, like boots, meaningful English words. Thus, the question is not whether Boots is a portmanteau or not. The question rather is whether Carroll intended to use Boots as a portmanteau. Another question is whether the lines 9 and 10 are intentionally ambiguous. Is there a Boots who is a maker of Bonnets and Hoods, or are the Boots and the maker of Bonnets two different characters? I suggest that Carroll left it to the readers to choose between 9 or 10 Snark hunters.

I believe what a nephew of Stuart Freeborn told me: His uncle did not plagiarize Yoda. But someone among the makers of the movie might have noticed the similarity of Yoda to the Baker's uncle in "The Hunting of the Snark". That's a very faithful translation of lines 9 to 12 in Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark", also because it is undisputable (albeit not obvious) that: ※ "Botas" is an interlaced portmanteau of "Bonetes" and "Tocas". ※ "Boots" is an interlaced portmanteau of "Bonnets" and "Hoods". The translator kept it like that, while maintaining the ambiguity of these lines. The translation isn't a spoiler. Did Carroll intend that we discuss whether Carroll intended to create an interlaced portmanteau which is not as clearly to recognize as e.g. the word "Rilchiam", which of course was an intended interlaced portmanteau in Lewis Carroll's preface to his Snark tragcomedy?

Each of them perhaps is unusual in itself. But what connects them is fascinating as well (at least to me). This side-by-side assembly is the result of a kind of collaboration between Henry Holiday, J. E. Millais, an anonymous painter and Philip Galle (with an engraving reproducing Maarten van Heemskerck’ work). In each segment (shown here) of an artwork the younger artists alludes to the work of the older artist. Is this pictorial citation chain an insider game between artists? How about discussing that in the classroom? The pope could be Paul III. [4] – (bedpost #3 alludes to bedpost #4): 1564, Redrawn segment of a print "Ahasuerus consulting the records" by Philip Galle after Maarten van Heemskerck. The resemblance of #4 to the image #3 (the bedpost) was shown by the late Margaret Aston in 1994 in "The King’s Bedpost: Reformation and Iconography in a Tudor Group Portrait" (p. 68). She also compared the bedpost to Heemskerck’s "Esther Crowned by Ahasuerus".

The "maker of Bonnets and Hoods" isn't necessarily a hatter. He also could be someone who makes nautical equipment like bonnet sails and ventilation hoods. In the image below you can see a ventilation hood behind a sail. The sail could be a bonnet (an extension to the lower edge of an existing sail), which is connected to the bowsprit which (as Snark readers know) got mixed with the rudder sometimes. Once the ship has been snarked in that manner, the helmsman (this office was usually undertaken by the Boots) used to stand by with tears in his eyes; he knew it was all wrong, but alas! In the image you also see the Beaver making lace in the bow. The bowsprit and the bonnet are positioned behind the animal. It seems that sometimes the maker of bonnets had to ferociously plan a novel arrangement of bows.

Since 150 years most readers didn't notice that Lewis Carroll left it in the lines 9 and 10 of his Snark tragicomedy to the readers to decide whether there are 9 or 10 Snark hunters (https://snrk.de/?s=9.5). https://snrk.de/starry-map/ John Tufail’s “The Illuminated Snark” (p. 15) lead me to this comparison. In 2004 he interpreted the starry night sky in Henry Holiday’s front cover illustration to Lewis Carroll’s “The Hunting of the Snark” (1876) as a map, where the white clouds represented land with rivers. I liked the suggestion, but did not find any real-world map to which Holiday might have alluded. Holiday engraved that illustration himself. I discovered John Tufail’s paper in 2009. Only today, after 15 years, I got the idea to compress and flip a large segment of a map of the British isles vertically. That’s my “slowness in taking a jest”. You see the result. Sadly, I can’t tell John that anymore. I appreciated his guidance a lot. The white clouds weren’t the land, but as for a map having been hidden in the illustration, John was right.
