Tumblr reblog screenshot [user icon] mcgravin That would be the SS El Faro, which sank sometime shortly after 7:39 a.m. on October 1, 2015 in Hurricane Joaquin. In the interest of accuracy, the "ruh roh" was not a broadcast, but rather was one of the bridge crew speaking to the rest of the bridge crew. The reason we know what was said is because the El Faro was equipped with a voyage data recorder, pretty much the same thing as the black box on an airplane, which was recovered and allowed the NTSB to reconstruct a lot of the events in the El Faro's final ~24 hours of the voyage. There's a transcript available online, with a lot of really interesting details about the recording system. Just a heads up, some parts of the transcript are pretty harrowing, especially the final minutes. Speaking of the final minutes, besides the "ruh roh" not being a broadcast, it's also not the final thing on the recording, by a long shot. The "ruh roh" happens at 03:00:48 EDT, or just after 3am (page 340 of the transcript linked above), while the final thing recorded was a "sound of building low frequency rumble" and the captain yelling out for the helmsman at 07:39:38 (4 hours and 169 pages later). The last actual broadcast was a satellite transmission received by the US Coast Guard, reportedly at approximately 7:30am EDT (I say "reportedly" because this doesn't seem to jive with the timeline in the transcript), when the captain said that the ship had lost propulsion and was taking on water, but the flooding was contained.
