Having read many pre-TV age match reports, debate on decisions was rarely if ever reported. Probably closest thing to modern day controversy was 1932 Cup final. Earliest example I know of media using photographic evidence of a "missed" lino call. (Lino isn't in shot - he's up by the half-way line)
