“You want to say any corporate CEO, CFO worth their salt, an Amazon CFO could find 3 percent in the federal budget on a Tuesday afternoon. This is, there is so much waste in government spending.” A year ago, the Elon Musk-led DOGE promised $2 trillion in savings. They ‘delivered’ 0.1% at the cost of gutting essential services for tens of millions of Americans, and killed 757,314 people – the majority children - through shuttering USAID. Also, federal spending has since gone up.
"We have way too much corporate welfare, way too much corporate subsidies. There's way too much influence in politics from business, in some cases, wealthy people who really focus on that, unions. There's a bunch of people interfering in the political process." Jeff Bezos’ companies have benefited enormously from lobbying. Amazon has received $15 billion in government subsidies since the year 2000. Blue Origin spent $15 million in lobbying and received $5.5 billion in taxpayer funding. After donating $1 million to Donald Trump’s inauguration, Amazon’s tax bill went from $9 billion in 2024 to $1.2 billion in 2025.
"If I do my job right, the value to society and civilization from my for-profit companies will be much, much larger than the good that I do with my charitable giving." Amazon is responsible for destabilizing local economies across the country by putting thousands of small businesses out of business. The company is notorious for treating their workers poorly. Half of warehouse workers surveyed say they struggle to afford enough food or a place to live. Amazon drivers went viral complaining how they were forced to pee in bottles to stay on inhumane schedules. The company still refuses to recognize the Amazon union, throwing endless legal challenges in an attempt to outlast the union.
True, but only because Bezos barely pays anything in taxes already. According to a ProPublica report, Bezos made $99 billion between 2014-2018, but only paid $937 million in taxes - an effective tax rate of just 0.98%. The average teacher is taxed at 9.8%. Like most billionaires, Bezos does not make his money through income but assets like stocks. He then takes loans against his total wealth to use as liquid capital. This is why we need to implement a wealth tax.
“You have a bunch of people in this country who are doing really well, but you also have a bunch of people in this country who are struggling to pay rent, groceries.” According to Federal Reserve Data from Q1 2024, the top 1% of households in the United States held 30.5% of the country's wealth, while the bottom 50% held just 2.5%. 905 billionaires hold $7.8 trillion in net wealth, almost double that held by the 66 million households that make up the bottom 50%.
