But something else is elided here. What about trans men? Thus far, the distinctive struggles and joys of transmasculine life have been downplayed to the point of being disappeared in much revolutionary theory. The question of how a proletarian manhood, or something like it, can be forged in the face of separation is a fraught one; like many such questions, it is too often avoided altogether. Most relevant revolutionary thought in the Anglophone context has been articulated under the label ‘transfeminism’, a designation which often seems to relegate trans male activists to a secondary standing. This tendency self-perpetuates through a cycle of reaction, as transphobes take particular offence at the notion of trans womanhood, meaning attempted rebuttals of their bigotry tend to centre around a defence of trans women. The consequence is that the particular position and distinctive struggles faced by those transitioning to male are unthinkingly downplayed. We have little time for analysis which weighs up diligently who ranks as most oppressed among the oppressed. Let’s move beyond this dead-end evaluation, and towards the shared emancipation which can only be achieved by comrades.
Reading the article about latest hate-crime statistics, I can't help wondering if some of those labeled lesbians over the years have been misgendered, and were actually transmasculine: binary or nonbinary. I know that if I had been murdered 5 years ago, it would have been classified as a woman, despite my identity or presentation. Its bizarre that regardless of gender identity, a male-assigned-at-birth person killed for dressing in "drag" is counted towards transgender murder statistics, as being under the "trans umbrella." But if a butch is killed, or a female in masculine dress, shouldn't that count as the same? For instance, look at the life of Leslie Feinberg, a person who was repeatedly targeted due to looking androgynous. If Leslie was killed, where would that crime have been marked down? While lesbian may not be inaccurate in that hypothetical case, it's misleading, because someone looking at statistics will walk away with the sense that trans-masculine people are non-existent and/or privileged with safety. And while many of us have access to hormones and to passing, more of us, like myself, choose to live very openly. More of us are trying to establish ourselves as artists, writers, and distinguished members of our communities in general. Not all of those larger communities are accepting. I think it is therefore reasonable to always be prepared for the worst.

After all, what kind of knowledge is a properly mature person supposed to possess about their/her/his own sexuality? Is that knowledge like the quick recall of a phone number or email address? (Some people do rattle off their sex/ gender identities as if they were reciting coordinates.) Or is having knowledge of sexuality like the familiarity with home spaces that allows you to navigate in the dark? Is it recognizing your own smell on unwashed clothes? How about "knowing" that what you want right now is two scoops of pistachio ice cream? If you believe that knowing your sexuality is accomplished by finding your sexual or gender identity, could you say what kind of pedagogy "identity" implies? You don't have to be a Victorian Platonist to wonder whether erotic attractions might be more complicated or elusive than routine "information."

Today, a list of people I have encountered who identify as nonbinary would include: a white female-assigned person who has studied Buddhism and decided that, ontologically, gender is not binary; a number of female- assigned feminists who experience discomfort with patriarchal expecta- tions; a number of transitioned trans people who wish to be "out" as trans and avow that their life history has not been within a single gender; a num- ber of brown people who wish to decolonize the "colonial gender binary"; a number of Black people for whom, due to a history of ungendering, blackness precludes cisgender status. According to this logic, all "woke" people should be nonbinary; only the politically retrograde would subscribe to a binary gender identity, much less believe in binary gender at all.

Identification is the psychic process that makes the interval between the individual and the social apparent; it is not the site of their suture. Or, as Butler puts it, "identification is not identity," a distinction that has been forgotten within nonbinary discourse.

But apparently pseudo-intersectionality (the type that doesn't respect distinct groups & their needs) means somehow everything is about you and we can't and shouldn't have language to discuss our oppression. It's so weird... and transfem isn't a catch-all for all trans women. It's weird when you group us all under that. This is such bad faith bullshit to say every group experiences transmisogyny. In this chapter, I take up some of the questions raised by contemporary discussions of transsexuality about the relations between identity, embodi-ment, and gender. In an extended consideration of the differences and continuities between transsexual, transgender, and lesbian masculinities, I approach the thorny questions of identity raised by the public emergence of the female-to-male transsexual (FTM) in the last decade or so. If some female-born people now articulate clear desires to become men, what is the effect of their transitions on both male masculinity and on the category of butch? What will be the effect of a visible transsexual population on young people who cross-identify? Will more tomboys announce their transsexual aspirations if the stigma is removed from the category?

Hormones matter because they reorganize how bodies are read and managed. They alter how institutions classify you. They alter how strangers respond. They alter where violence lands. That is not ideology. That is observation. At the same time, hormones are not the essence of transness. They matter because they force a shift in social relations. Consequence is what gives them political weight. The same is true of names. The same is true of pronouns. The same is true of declaration. Each one forces the world to respond. The response might be refusal or hostility, but it exists. That existence marks a change in position. That change is transition.
