Call for papers - AAA Annual Meeting 2026, St. Louis, Missouri, November 19-22, 2026 At World's End Organizer: KG Hutchins Provisional abstract: The stability of the climate is, globally, on the verge of collapse. For herders in Siberia this crisis has been long unfolding, as the thawing of the permafrost destroys the world they know and releases remnants of an older world into the air (Crate 2021). For others, like the people of the southern Blue Ridge Mountains, this crisis came all at once in a rush of catastrophic flooding. Whether gradually or suddenly, climate change has already made it so that people around the planet are faced with the prospect of the end of a world. How can anthropology handle these environmental apocalypses? From surviving the interplay of economic and ecological precarity (Tsing 2015), to managing extinction (Parreñas 2018), to becoming climate refugees (Morris 2022), people are faced with a variety of environmental apocalypses and the afterworlds those catastrophes promise. In keeping with this year’s theme of being on the “Verge,” each talk in this panel examines how people think about, prepare for, or adapt to the concept of a world ending. Keywords: apocalypse, posthumanism, critical ecologies, geography, environment Please send abstracts (250 words max) with working title and presenter information to KG Hutchins (khutchin@oberlin.edu) by 5pm eastern time on Friday, April 10th. It's just what I know. And what they tell me, these things I finally let myself trust, is what we're doing to this land is not only murder. It is suicide
