I once had to reject a candidate for being too good. At least that's what we told ourselves. She was the strongest person the hiring team interviewed. Nobody disputed that. Then the concerns started. "She'll get bored." "She won't stay long." "She's overqualified." And eventually, the one nobody wanted to say out loud: "What happens if she wants my job?" So we passed. We hired someone who felt "safer". The safer hire struggled. The role stayed half-filled for months. And we spent the next year looking for the kind of person we had already found, but rejected. I've watched versions of this happen more times than I can count. A team writes a job description asking for someone exceptional. Then gets uncomfortable when exceptional actually shows up. We say we want people who will challenge the team... then worry they'll challenge the team. We say we want someone who can grow... then worry they'll grow too fast. Overqualified is just a word we use when a candidate makes us nervous. Looking back, we had plenty of opinions about her. What we didn't have was any real evidence of how she actually worked.
