I have continued to dig around because I don’t like the way the site smells. This thread is kind of going the way of people just complaining about brands they dislike, which is perhaps better in general, but I refuse to be derailed. The site itself appears to be two things: a newsletter and the Ledger, a database of brand names that I kind of suspect were extracted from the newsletter using an LLM, given the formatting and style choices. (Also the author’s website has busted scrollbars on my browser, which suggests a lack of care.) The Methodology says that entries are derived from newsletters and tips as well, but since the newsletter originated on March 26 of this year, I can’t think there have been that many tips yet. (The methodology also states that brands will be re-evaluated every 12 months, which seems a bit unlikely.) There are two silly reasons beyond formatting why I think entries have been bulk inserted by LLM. First, there are 162 brands in there, and ain’t no way this hobbyist reviewer is putting in 162 brands himself. Second, when I looked at the the listing for Lands’ End (categorized as “Apparel”), there’s a link back to the “investigation” (the site’s term) of… backpacks, and not the later investigation/newsletter where Lands’ End is mentioned. The backpack investigation doesn’t mention Lands’ End, or its parent companies. But, of course, Lands’ End also makes backpacks! This is an unproven assertion, but it seems plausible to me that an LLM making up a database might connect the dots wrong and tie the company to the wrong write up.
