The Cigar Galaxy - Messier M 82 - a starburst galaxy approximately 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. It is the second-largest member of the M81 Group. The starburst activity is thought to have been triggered by interaction with neighboring galaxy M81. Tidal forces caused by gravity have deformed M82, a process that started about 100 million years ago. This interaction has caused star formation to increase tenfold compared to "normal" galaxies. As a starburst galaxy, Messier 82 is prone to frequent supernova, caused by the collapse of young, massive stars. It is believed M 82 contains at least 30 billion stars.
