Very encouraging to hear Burnham rail against the whipping system, the pathologically adversarial culture of Westminster, the departmental silos, the suffocating centralisation of the British state. He gets it. The instinctive reaction right now is lazy, sleep-walking cynicism, or sullen don't-give-me-hope despair. But the truth is: someone with very good communication skills, the right diagnosis and a reforming zeal is about to become prime minister. That seems pretty fucking encouraging to me.

Ian Dunt posts: Ultimately a lot depends on the original question Starmer answered: Can you deliver competent government? Functioning public services, a decent economy, evidence-based long-term policy, an end to superficial quick-fix mindless bollocks and vacuous drama. Starmer looked like exactly the man for that. Quite clearly, for whatever reason, he is not. Who else can convincingly lay out a plan for the original proposition?

Ian Dunt (with Dorian Lynskey nodding in agreement): So i think as you watch coverage of gaza but especially people's response to gaza, the word genocide now kind of functions (i might be being slightly unfair here but i don't think i am) almost as a sort of membership badge for a position on the debate. so essentially, those who are using the word, typically speaking, use it as an indication just of the extent of their moral outrage over what's taking place. and those who generally have a different position on it, either because they're pro-israel or not because they're not quite just fully immersed in one side of the discussion, tend to refrain from using it because they're aware of its emotive power it's a pretty clear cut case of when a word's emotional power has completely overruled any kind of assessment as to its objective meaning
