Since President Donald Trump announced his sweeping tariffs on April 2, the stock market has been volatile and people are nervous — perhaps panicking.

I don’t feel one bit nervous. The stock market has a long history of acting squeamish when the status quo is shaken up. And Trump’s tariff actions — which he has been talking about for years — just might be the biggest economic policy earthquake we’ve experienced in a while. But left out of this post-“Liberation Day” hysteria is the trillions of dollars of foreign investment in the United States that have been committed since Trump took office.

Trump has been railing about the trade imbalances that the Washington establishment has treated as “business as usual” for decades. The one time an American president says this has gone on long enough, the rest of the world squeals like a stuck pig and Wall Street throws a hissy fit.

Let me tell you something, folks. Trump didn’t undertake the greatest comeback in political history to become another mediocre, inconsequential president like Millard Fillmore or Warren G. Harding. When he says we hold all the cards in a trade war, I believe him.

After years of publicly speaking with utmost conviction about this issue, the man knows what he’s been talking about. As he said of the American economy in 2018, “We hold all the cards.”

It’s possible that, at this seminal moment in U.S. history, there could be a rocky few months ahead. To drive the point home to the skittish to stay the course, I suggest the White House adopt the dual slogans “In Trump We Trust” and “We Hold All the Cards.”
