Statement reads: The decision by Justice Roberts’ Supreme Court to uphold state bans on transgender athletes participating in high school sports is very upsetting. While we have state protections in place in Minnesota to protect the rights of our transgender athletes to freely participate, we strongly condemn this decision, and the harm it will do to students across the country. As educators we know the value extracurricular activities, like sports, the arts, and clubs afford our students. It goes beyond the activity itself and gives our youth a place to belong, be themselves, learn resilience, and practice the hard work of being together in community. We know an attack on our community when we see it. We know that the goal is to pit us against each other, in the hope that we will ignore these authoritarian attacks on our community and our democracy. As a strong union we say: An injury to one is an injury to all. To all of our trans students, colleagues, and neighbors, we see you, we stand with you, and we will continue to fight alongside you! -SPFE Executive Board
