She was chased out into the swamps of the Sorrowood where she joined a coven of woodwitches. In time, she became gyre carline of her coven and took the name once used to ridicule her, the Babayaga.
Within the kingdom of Nal, there exists a curious station among the nobility, that of the onmyoji. Regarded as the King’s Royal Conjurer, the onmyoji practices a form of necromancy, calling forth spirits of the dead to advise the King of Nal. In addition, the onmyoji also acts as the King’s Royal Banisher, exorcising wayward spirits who have taken undue possession of the living. This strange occurrence seems to happen in Nal more often than any other nation, as local legends claim that on their nightly passage to the afterlife, departing spirits would often be distracted by the beauty of the twin rivers, the Sunwater and the Moonwater, and settle in the minds of the sleeping denizens of Nal. Clad in their crimson robes and distinctive mitred caps, it was the job of the onmyoji to separate the errant spirit from the body of the possessed and guide it back on its path to the afterlife. The jingling of the many gold, silver and bronze coins that decorate their attire was the telltale sign of the coming of an onmyoji, and it was this rattling that was said to confuse the spirits in order for the Royal Conjurer to work his or her Magick. Tencendur, Royal Conjurer of King Tustin II of Nal, conjuring the spirit of the king’s late father, Tustin I. The spirits are often featureless, just a mass of floating ectoplasm that speaks through the onmyoji. Though some skeptics claim that this conjuring is nothing more than an elaborate parlor trick, the onmyoji has held a treasured place among the monarchy of Nal for centuries.
A foul bespoiling of the air, miasma is a sickly green vapor that seeps from cracks in the earth in some areas around the world. What causes this putrescent fog is unknown, but some speculate it is hateful residue from the Gods of Hell imprisoned below the surface. Those affected by miasma have reported a slow, deteriotating drain on their health, with long term exposure even leading to death. Some historians blame the Plague of Valeyra on a cloud of miasma hanging over the ancient empire. Among those intrepid explorers who claim to have found the lost city of Valvalis, they experienced a different variety of miasma - one that drained mana from the environment, rendering any manufacted artifices powered by mana infusion cells totally useless and leaving mages devoid of their Magick. The most infamous stretch of miasma-infested land is found just aoutside the ancient city of Wuestenstad. The Dom Golab is an expanse of cracked, parched earth with an ever-present veil of miasma lingering about. In the center of this fog lies the ruins of Drogismega and its vast network of subterranean tunnels and caverns.

Deep within the gloomy forests of the Dimwood, a lone tree lies in a clearing. In stark contrast to the robust and hearty woods surrounding it, this tree stands gnarled and twisted, its once strong bark petrified to a pale grey. This is the Hallowtree, said to be the location where Nishiji, architect of the Third Great Schism, was finally defeated. His army crushed and abandoned by his generals, the fiendish Nishiji attempted to hide within the lone tree’s hollow. The blinding light of Daybringer, the mythical sword of the battlemage Damoclen, led the armies of the Lilac Alliance, a courageous alliance of kings, princes and nobles, to the calcified tree. Stolomir, eldest son of the Widow-King who was betrayed by Nishiji, cut the treacherous fiend down upon its roots. Since that time, the knotted and misshapen Hallowtree has held an air of unease and disquiet. Long thought haunted by the nearby villages of Surogorod and Volgorod, its area of the Dimwood is normally avoided by hunters and foresters. Centuries ago, a coven of woodwitches bound the tree in thick-woven ropes of grisreed to confine the evil spirit of Nishiji within, but over time the ropes have slacked and loosened. Today the tree and its resident parliament of death’s head owls are cared for by the eccentric moonmage Svarta, who lives in a small cottage on the edge of the clearing. Every full moon she performs a ritual cleansing ceremony to keep the cursed nature of the tree in check. Even before Nishiji’s downfall upon the Hallowtree’s roots, it was regarded as a site of preternatural activity. Death’s head owls, themselves long thought to be omens of impending doom, have always congregated upon its gnarled branches. Tradition among the woodwitches of the Dimwood holds that the air surrounding the tree is especially thin, allowing one to easily reach across the veil and contact the spirit world.

Vainglory was the garishly ornamental sword belonging to Sir Zigmund, the brazen leader of the Purefoy faction of the Electors of Limerot during the Second Great Schism. The Purefoys had sided with the Imposter Queen, Dormella, in her bid to usurp her brother, Lido, for the rule of the Viridian Empire. Their party was opposed by the Bannermen, those Electors who sided with Lido and were led by the venerable Sir Veridot. From his fortress at Purefoy Castle, Sir Zigmund led strikes against the Bannermen, or the Green and Whites as they came to be known, often brandishing Vainglory to rally his troops to battle. They scored several victories during the decades-long conflict, but Dormella’s reign was ultimately ended at the Battle of Apocatylo. Zigmund and his fellow Purefoys were captured and those who survived the war were forced to abdicate their positions and forfeit their holdings. Zigmund escaped confinement and led a life of constant peregrination, eventually falling in with a crew of Drow pirates called the Carrion Crowes in the Inner Sea. Tales of a dashing eastron pirate with a golden sword soon spread among the cities along the sea. He was eventually killed in an engagement with Magehunters several years after his defeat at Apocatylo and the sword passed to Beckit, captain of the Crowes. Vainglory is currently held by Drisi, self-styled Countess of the Inner Sea. She won it after mutiny against her former captain, Colosimo, and assuming control of the Cold Dowagers, themselves a mutinous offshoot of the ancient Carrion Crowes.
Cloudsplitter was the name of the katana wielded by Itsuki, one of the original 7 founders of the Ryujin Elites, master swordsmen of the ruined city of Nal. The long, curved blade was enchanted by an aeromancer by the name of Setonia, who had been rescued by Itsuki from the fearsome Asphodel Sharum sky pirates. The legends claim that Itsuki tracked them to their secret lair hidden deep within the Cloudsea, flying his small aero skiff through dangerous winds and calamitous storms. When he came upon their hidden fleet, he singlehandedly defeated the pirates and rescued Setonia, who ensorcelled his sword in gratitude. With his blade now brimming with the power of wind, Itsuki battered the aeroships of the Asphodel Sharum, scattering what remained of their bandit armada. The pirates would take centuries to recover from their defeat, and still whisper tales about the One Who Split the Clouds. Cloudsplitter has been handed down through the ages among the Ryujin Elites, with the current owner of the katana being Carthago, the champion of Calideon. Upon the death of Linwei, the former holder of the sword, Carthago was elected to the Elites and given the honor of wielding Cloudsplitter based on his exploits protecting Calideon from the bostrop, a savage sea serpent that threatened the merchants of the coastal city.
Among the many varied mana-powered devices produced by Loci Manaworks, perhaps the most widely used is the Concord Mark II.a mana-infused sword. Named after the mythical bird-king that founded the city of Loci during the time of the Heroes, the Mark II.a is an upgrade over the previous Mark I.cv. Mana-powered swords feature increased durability, lighter weight and a Magickally enhanced edge. The Mark II.a sports a polished maplewood hilt with a likeness of Concord forming the pommel. It holds a capacity of three 100MP mana infusion cells, but can be upgraded to hold a total of 600 iotas of mana potent. Discharge vents cover the back-end of the blade, releasing spent mana out of the internal power reserve. Lucrative contracts with several armies, as well as mercenary companies, have put the Concord Mark II.a in the hands of countless soldiers across the land. Loci supplies Concord Mark II.a swords as well as Audley-Greene mana pistols to the Magehunters of the Order of the Maleus Maleficarum. Many hunters choose to futher modify their weaponry, some pushing the power of the internal mana converter far past its manufactory’s limits.
Sgorath’s Bond was the name of a strange crystalline sword carried by the astromancer Yesperat. Originally an advisor to Single-Eyed Suvik, one of the Ancient Kings, the eccentric starmage began to obsess over a name he discovered in a primitive astrological chart: Sgorath. He believed this to be the name of an all-powerful cosmic diety that lived among the Firmament and would one day descend to earth and rule over all of Man. He was exiled from Suvik’s court but soon found himself a small following in the city of Sinneslochen. They erected a temple along the sea, the Sgoratheon, just outside the city, from which he and his disciples would watch the stars for any sign from their distant god. One evening, a large and jagged shard of nightglass washed up upon the beach before the temple, which Yesperat interpreted as a gift from Sgorath. He inscribed the shard with the names of stars and other astromantic runes, and chiseled and sharpened it into a sword-like shape. Yesperat never used the asperous blade in battle, instead treating it as a ceremonial object to focus his starmagick through. The Sgoratheon was later destroyed in the rage of a violent seastorm, but afterward no bodies were recovered from the rubble, nor Yesperat’s sacred sword found. Today, small sects of Yesperatians still look to the stars for the eventual coming of Sgorath and the return of their founder. Often times, Yesperat would be seen sitting on the temple steps caressing and whispering to the crystalline sword before turning his eyes skyward to scan the Firmament for a sign from his god. Accounts detail that he would sit, transfixed on the heavens, for hours, and sometimes even days, at a time.
The Earthsworn Blade was a large stone sword carried by the geomancer Vilhjalmur. A recluse living in the Forest of the Baer King just south of the northron coastal town of Minzeck, Vilhjalmur spent decades studying the art of geomancy. When Minzek was threatened by the Tupilaq, a group of masqued seafaring raiders, he hefted his mighty blade and defended the port. Legends claim that he used his stonemagick, concentrated through the Earthsworn Blade, to drive large pillars of rock upward from the seafloor, smashing the Tupilaq boats to pieces. He then crossed the sea and defeated the leader of the Tupilaq, Great Lear, atop the tallest of the rock formations. These jagged stone spires gradually eroded over the centuries to form the island now known as Learsend. To this day intrepid explorers and excavators scour the craggy peaks for Vilhjalmur’s great sword, but it is still yet to be found among the shattered Tupilaq masques and the splintered slivers of their boats. After defeating Great Lear, Vilhjalmur struck the ground with the Earthsworn Blade and his body collapsed into a thousand tiny pebbles. It is said that should anyone find Vilhjalmur’s sword upon the island of Learsend, only one courageous and pure of heart could heft the mighty sword from the earth where it has sat stoic and moss-ridden for ages.
