calls for "media literacy" and "critical thinking" should not be about shaming people for not reaching a standard of intellectual capacity but about reminding everyone that *we* live in a world that actively teaches us to fear complicated things, to fear not knowing and unknowns, to turn away from curiosity, and to fear who and what refuses to (or otherwise cannot) explain itself immediately and conveniently. its about a call to resist the way we are trained to be susceptible to control. the more we fear complicated things, the more we fear processes and unknowns that require trust and active participation and curiosity, the more vulnerable we are to being funneled mis and dis information by people who claim to have all the answers, and very convenient and comfortable ones at that.
