The Washington Post's Karen Tumulty highlights in an opinion piece Monday that YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV have so far refused to add C-SPAN to its list of offerings, leaving millions of Americans unable to access the public affairs network of record. "Fewer and fewer Americans these days are getting access to C-SPAN. And that is creating a growing financial crisis for the network, which receives no government funding and is financed by a tiny sliver of what people pay on their cable bills," she writes. Ms. Tumulty notes that C-SPAN is the only network that carries many public affairs events from start to finish. "But as more and more people are cutting the cable cord, C-SPAN is hemorrhaging viewers. Where in 2013 it reached about 100 million households, what it offers now can be found on televisions in only 51 million. (There are about 69 million households with pay-TV services.)," she writes. "Many of those viewers have migrated to live TV streaming services. Some, such as DirecTV Stream, carry C-SPAN, but the two largest — YouTube TV (owned by Google) and Hulu + Live TV (owned by Disney) — do not." C-SPAN costs only 7.25 cents a month per subscriber, compared to $2.67 for Fox News, $1.33 for CNN and 39 cents for MSNBC — yet the streaming giants don't believe the network is worth carrying despite YouTube alone raking in more than $10 billion in ad revenue in the last quarter of 2024. "It is also worth noting that much of the 2024 increase in YouTube's revenue was driven by political advertising," Ms. Tumulty writes. "So, if YouTube is helping to get people elected, shouldn't its subscribers get a closer look at what they are doing after they are in office?"
