Around them, everyone shouts HAPPY NEW YEAR! and confetti falls and couples kiss and Yoongi and Soojin are just standing in the middle of it all, looking anywhere but at each other’s faces. Soojin glances up just as Yoongi does, and they make eye contact for a split second with an awkward chuckle.
The older man rolls his eyes fondly. “Ah, the youth these days. So much passion!” Jeongguk looks a bit put out. “Hyung. You're only like, two years older than me.” “It's five years, Gguk-ah. One day, you’ll be 60 years old like me and you’ll understand.” “Wasn’t it 50 yesterday?” “Close enough!” the older man–who doesn’t look a day over 30–says haughtily. They stare at each other before breaking out into laughter, clearly at some kind of age-related inside joke. Jeongguk grins at Yoongi and the Doctor.
He lines up again. “Extremely expert shot,” Yoongi says seriously, hitching his leg up on the table. “Watch and learn.” This time, he sends a green ball careening around the table as it bounces from edge to edge. It does not go anywhere near a pocket. “Will you look at that,” he says. “With ease.”
Campus is frozen, huge icicles hanging off buildings and a dusting of snow covering all the trees and buildings. It all sparkles in the January sun, and even though winter is still a novel concept to Jungkook, he nonetheless marvels at how warm and familiar it all feels. It really does feel like coming back home.
“What’s with you, Yoongi-yah?” he says, turning Yoongi in his arms so they’re facing each other again. “You’re sure nothing happened on that road trip?” Yoongi snorts out a laugh. “No way. She wouldn’t even entertain the idea of being friends. Said we were best enemies.” “Okay,” Yijeong says, raising his eyebrow, shrugging.
He learns that as much as Namjoon loves whiskey, he sometimes loves a sweet cocktail even more. Yoongi has taken to stockpiling recipes and trying them out on Namjoon to varying levels of success. (The mint chocolate one was a hard no, but the cinnamon vanilla old-fashioned–using real vanilla beans that he’s saved for months–was an instant favorite.)
For all her confident demeanor, her bluster, her jokes, Soojin does have a soft underbelly. She learned long ago not to let it show, but the more time she spends with Jungha and Yoongi, the more she finds that she wants to. She's never had anyone she's wanted to be vulnerable with, but just seeing the two of them, how comfortable they are with each other, makes Soojin want to be, too.
Jia turns around as they approach, eyes bright. "Appa!” she exclaims, grinning, excited to share new information in the way only a nine-year-old can. "Did you know that around one million Earths could fit inside the sun?" Yoongi smiles and peers down at the display, which includes several interesting facts about the solar system. “I knew the sun was much bigger than Earth, but I never really thought about it that way, no,” he says.
“I don’t want to, like, poach Chef Lee’s entire kitchen,” Seokjin tells Yoongi one day, “but I’d love to bring a lot of these folks with me. Maybe not everyone I’m thinking of right away, but it's definitely a dream of mine.” “If we’re talking about dreams, know what I want to do?” Yoongi says. “Open a makchang restaurant.”
Her movements are on autopilot as she empties her pockets, hauls her bag onto the conveyor belt, and removes her shoes. She goes through the metal detector, retrieves her things, and starts walking before she realizes she forgot to check if she's even going in the right direction. She retrieves her slightly crumpled boarding pass from her bag and frowns at it. She can't believe that after five years, Min Yoongi is still able to so easily knock her off course. She can't believe that after five years, she's even run into him at all.
“I just…I wish I had at least been able to speak to them one last time,” he says. “I wish they had known how much I loved them, even when I was being a little shit.” “I’m sure they knew,” Namjoon says. “Like I said, you were a kid. They loved you. They knew you, even if you felt like they didn’t.” Yoongi isn’t sure about that, can’t erase the years of guilt and doubt that plagued him, but it does help to hear Namjoon say it.
“Hey, Soobin,” Yoongi says to the young barista standing beside the counter. “Can we get two coffees and some steamed milk with honey for my small friends here?” Soobin grins, jumping into action. “Of course, hyungnim!” he says.
In those early days after the spider bite, when his heightened senses would go haywire as his body tried to adjust to the foreign DNA, it had been Yoongi who’d slip into his room, fit his own noise-canceling headphones over Jungkook’s ears, and hold him tightly until his breathing evened out and his heart was beating normally again.
Jungkook yawns, then shuts his laptop with a satisfying click. “Alright, I'm going to bed.” Yoongi raises his eyebrows. “You? Bed? Before midnight?” “I'm trying to take care of myself like you said, okay?” Jungkook says. It comes out just on the edge of whiny, to his horror.

Yoongi's eyes widen momentarily before he snorts out an amused huff. “What?” “Look,” Yoongi says. The sun has set and they still haven't turned on the lights, so Jungkook's dorm room is cast in a grey gloom, lit only by the glow of their computer screens. Jungkook leans over, and Yoongi turns his screen toward him, grinning. It's Spider-Man fan art, a piece where he's shown from waist-up, wearing only his mask. Instead of his suit covering his torso, his bare chest and arms are rendered in exquisite detail, every bulging muscle and defined six-pack glistening with sweat. “Thoughts?” Yoongi says, turning his head to look at Jungkook with a smirk. “That's….that's a lot of detail,” Jungkook says, a little shell-shocked. “I don't look like that in real life.” Yoongi shrugs. “Close enough.”
“He told me that he met Commander Kim’s paramour,” Jimin says, savoring each syllable. “And when he described the guy, he sounded a lot like someone I knew.” “Did he now,” Yoongi responds with a sigh, looking up at the ceiling. “He did,” Jimin says, grinning gleefully. Then he smacks Yoongi on the arm, hard. “Ow!” Yoongi yelps. “Jimin, what the fuck?!” “Why didn’t you tell me you were fucking a hot Starfleet officer?” Jimin says furiously. “As a hot Starfleet officer myself, I need to know these things!” “Jimin, you specifically told me you didn’t ever want to hear about me fucking another hot Starfleet officer!” “Well, that was when the hot Starfleet officer in question wasn’t the fucking First Officer on my ship!” “Can you guys stop saying ‘hot Starfleet officer’?” Jungkook says loudly from the other side of the bar. “It’s getting really repetitive.”

Yoongi plants his feet and watches as Seokjin and Jimin face off playfully, crossing his arms over his chest as Seokjin does his little impromptu dance break. His unfairly handsome face is at odds with the slightly awkward way his limbs twist and flail, and Yoongi feels himself grin, heart twisting with fondness. His gaze, as always, wanders over toward Jimin, and he's an unintentional mirror of Yoongi in the way he looks at Seokjin with amused delight, mouth open in a smile. When it's Jimin’s turn, his body moves in that trademark effortless Jimin way, where he always manages to be unbearably sexy even when he’s not trying to be anything other than silly.

Taegyung jerks a thumb at Namjoon, then holds his PADD up to block him from view. "Between us, he's been a little precious about going to your bar on his own," he tells Yoongi. "Something about decompression time away from the crew. But now that we've met, I think I can see why he'd want to keep you all to himself." Namjoon has now turned a dark shade of puce. "Lieutenant Kim," he grumbles out through gritted teeth." Yoongi can't help but laugh silently, his shoulders shaking from it. Seeing Namjoon so out of sorts at some light teasing from his crew is better than Yoongi could have imagined. Taehyung's PADD chimes, and he glances down at, tapping at the display. "Listen, I've got to go," he says, still looking extremely pleased at Namjoon's distress. "Research awaits! But it was great to finally meet you. You two have fun, okay? See you later, Commander!" He turns and walks off, whistling cheerily.
