I miss the early days of personal computing, when everything was new and presented so many opportunities to learn, discover, and create - usually all atthe same time ‘And the ensuing multitudes of machines and operating systems, and trying to rewrite code to work on different platforms. ‘And a half-dozen friends and colleagues all gathered around one computer, chiming in with corrections and suggestions late into the night. ‘And taking turns raiding the refrigerator or the comer store, falling asleep wherever it was convenient, being awakened by colleagues cheering success or decrying mistakes and failures. ‘And doing it all over again. It used to be fun, and personal, and rewarding. Now it's just another job.

My aunt died yesterday morning. She had the flu and pneumonia, along with an already compromised immune system. Her heart stopped. She declined going to the hospital because she had to work and didn't want to lose her job, they told her she couldn't take any more time off and had no choice but to come into work sick. They straight up told her "everyone is sick this time of year, you'l have to push through." So when my uncle told her he'd call 911 Christmas night after complaining her heart was racing and have them take her to the hospital, she declined and just said she'd get some sleep so she didn't miss work. She stopped breathing a few minutes later. The paramedics got a pulse after performing CPR, but she had very little brain activity by the time she got to the hospital and died at 6am yesterday. She worked for fucking Kohl's. Your job isn't worth your life.
