A letter to his aunt, from Bernis Brien, a private who served in the 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Bernis Brien would also fall ill and be transferred within the month. This letter, an eloquent description of the landscape, with a sense of optimism after Tampa. Carved out of the brush a city of tents would be moved once again, leaving the mosquitos behind.

There is a growing pile of letters and covers accumulating on an overburdened desk around here...saved through generations, and eventually passed along. I know there is a story behind most of them.

Alright, I admit it. I picked this cover up to make the corniest joke you will read all day. Sept Iles is quite a ways up there in Quebec though. (side note: fairly amazing how many people were bidding on this unique cover...)

The independent mail carriers of the 1840's delivered mail with such efficiency and cost effectiveness, the U.S. Post Office would be compelled to lower rates in 1847....as well as accept that prepaid mail and the use of adhesive stamps actually worked. (Cat. 117L3)
