Three things from the Carsten Kraus episode that I haven't been able to shake. Germany invents, then loses the company. The similarity search that powered online stores for a decade came from Carsten's team in 2000, two years before Google. The transformer was co-invented by a German.

Black Forest Labs trained their model in Freiburg, then moved to California. Aleph Alpha was technically competitive with GPT-3, then got twenty million while OpenAI got billions. We have the brain power. We don't have the patience or the capital to let inventors keep the company.
