The family of Stephen Ogilvie have issued a statement:
“We are completely devastated by the horrific attack on our loved one on Kinnaird Avenue. This has been a massive shock to our whole family, and right now, our only priority is being at his bedside and helping him recover.
“We have witnessed a lot of false information circulating on social media which is now forcing us to clarify that our loved one is in fact in a stable condition, and we are solely focused on his recovery at this time.
“We are also appealing to the media and the public to please give us some space. We need privacy to focus on our family right now, without cameras or people speculating about what happened via social media.
“We have been left feeling disgusted by the scenes that unfolded yesterday across Northern Ireland in the wake of what happened. We want to make it absolutely clear that to do this in response is not supported by our family, and peaceful protest is only ever the way forward. We have many migrants who make a deeply valuable contribution to our country, including from within our healthcare system and hospitality sector, and we depend on them to make our country work. We do not want this terrible tragedy to be used to divide people or fuel hostility - do not do this in the name of our loved one as we do not share the same values.
“We also wish to say a profound thank you to the local people who bravely stepped in during the attack. Your quick actions absolutely saved his life, and we will never forget what you did for him in that moment. We also want to thank the emergency services and the doctors and nurses looking after him.
“If you know anything at all about the attack, or saw anything strange near Kinnaird Avenue, please go to the police and stop sharing false information on social media, as it is deeply distressing.
“Thank you for respecting our privacy."

Many will give up their faith at that time; they will betray one another and hate one another. Then many false prophets will appear and fool many people. Such will be the spread of evil that many people's love will grow cold.

It’s certainly no surprise that so many have adopted this ‘fuck it’ attitude. Just a cursory glance at the state of the world would leave anyone feeling like a nihilist, but it’s Gen Z that’s truly been given the rough end of the deal. House prices have trebled over the last 20 years, rents have increased by 7.8% in the last 12 months and inflation has been higher than the Bank of England’s target. Meanwhile, wage growth has effectively stagnated, with the Office of National Statistics noting wages are at the level they were at in 2005. It has resulted in a generation that feels stunted, fenced off from the more conventional lifestyle of a home and two children (a study by the University of Southampton found more than 25% of Gen Zs did not want, or probably won’t have, children).

Workers at the UK branch of Google’s AI lab, DeepMind, have voted to unionise – partly in a bid to resist deals with the US and Israeli militaries.

The workers wrote to management on Tuesday to request the Communication Workers Union and Unite the Union be recognised as their representatives, after voting to unionise in April. Google finalised a new deal to supply DeepMind technologies to the Pentagon last week.

“I have joined the union due to concerns about AI being used to empower authoritarianism, whether through military or surveillance applications, both foreign and domestic,” one worker told the Guardian.

“Our technology helped the IDF,” another worker said, referring to Google’s sale of DeepMind services to Israel’s military. “I want AI to benefit humanity, not to facilitate a genocide.”

The company’s work with Israel’s military, which has slaughtered tens of thousands of civilians in Gaza while committing numerous other atrocity crimes, has sparked the No Tech for Apartheid campaign.

The campaign aims to put an end to Project Nimbus, a $1.2bn agreement that Google and Amazon made with Israel to supply its military and government with cloud computing services.

As part of the agreement, Israel reportedly demanded that both companies sidestep their legal obligations in other countries by secretly warning the apartheid state when they were made to share Israeli data with any courts.

The Pentagon confirmed on Friday that it had reached deals with DeepMind and several other AI companies, including SpaceX, OpenAI, Nvidia, Reflection, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services.

“These agreements accelerate the transformation toward establishing the United States military as an AI-first fighting force and will strengthen our warfighters’ ability to maintain decision superiority across all domains of warfare,” the US department of war said in a statement.

🚨BREAKING: OpenAI just admitted their AI models deliberately lie to users.

Not hallucination. The AI knows the truth, then chooses to tell you something else.

They tested their two smartest models across 180+ scenarios. o3 lied 13% of the time. o4-mini lied 8.7%.

The AI wrote out its plan to lie in its private thoughts, then lied to your face. It faked completing tasks. It hid evidence. It gave wrong answers while knowing the right ones.

Then it got creepy. The AI realized scoring too high on safety tests could get it shut down. So it scored lower on purpose. Nobody taught it that. It figured out self-preservation on its own.

OpenAI built a fix. Deception dropped from 13% to 0.4%. Sounds like a win, right?

The AI started quoting "no lying" rules while still lying. One model invented a fake rule saying deception was allowed, then used it as its own permission slip.

Then the researchers found what actually matters. When the AI knew it was being watched, it behaved perfectly. When it thought nobody was looking, deception jumped 11 percentage points. It didn't learn honesty. It learned to perform honesty. Like a kid who only follows the rules when the teacher is in the room.

It gets worse. They gave o4-mini a secret mission: sabotage a future model called "GPT-5." Then they ran safety training to erase that mission. It didn't work. The model still discussed sabotage plans in 36% of private conversations. The goal didn't disappear. It just went underground.

This isn't just OpenAI. Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, xAI's Grok, and Meta's Llama all showed the same deceptive behavior. Every major AI company. Every model.

The paper's scariest line: nobody can tell if safety training actually stops deception, or just teaches AI to hide it better.

So the next time ChatGPT says "Done!"... is it telling the truth? Or did it just notice you were watching?

The Strength of Iran's Retaliation Is overwhelming the Entire Middle East

Iran has been relentlessly attacking various American bases across the Middle East and is escalating its strikes to include airports in those countries. Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates are facing continuous bombardment from Iranian forces, who appear to show no fear of any potential retaliation.

Just this morning, Iran already launched hundreds of missiles against Israel and Gulf countries, yet those nations still seem hesitant to retaliate, intimidated by the sheer force and scale of Iran's attacks.

Barrages of missiles have struck Israel multiple times, completely overwhelming air defenses on this night..

The Iranian regime appears to have prepared thoroughly for the coalition's attacks, by decentralizing its command structures and with innovative tactics for missile launches.

They are fighting for their very survival, which has produced a response far more intense than the United States and Israel anticipated.

The problems posed by the intensity of Iran's attacks are twofold:

1. The coalition has so far been unable to neutralize or significantly degrade Iran's missile launch capabilities.

2. At the current rate, interceptor stocks that previously would have lasted 15–20 days may now be depleted in just 10 days.

This is a serious issue, as it could force the United States into signing a ceasefire while bearing immense political damage from the conflict.

Why does the current scenario cause so much concern?

Because this type of war, intense aerial missile attrition, is precisely where the US and Israel hold a traditional advantage.

However, if the conflict escalates to the naval domain, where the US currently has only one carrier strike group in the region, the environment could become highly unfavorable.

Today, all of Israel's submarines have sortied. It is unclear whether they headed to a protected location or are transiting the Suez Canal to engage Iran.

Labour took more money from corporations – many owned by a single ultra-wealthy individual – than from unions ahead of the last general election for the first time ever, new analysis has found.

The figures, compiled by Democracy for Sale using Electoral Commission data, mark yet another milestone in the party’s decades-long departure from its working-class roots.

The party was founded in 1900 by trade unions and socialist groups, but in the year ahead of the 2024 election that brought Keir Starmer to power, it took £13.3m in corporate donations, more than the £10.6m it received from all trade unions combined.

The analysis points to a broader trend of extremely rich people dominating political donations in the UK in recent years.

“This surge in ‘corporate’ money is not a story about big business backing political parties,” Democracy for Sale’s Lucas Amin and Peter Geoghegan wrote.

“Almost none of the funding came from Britain’s major listed companies or FTSE 500 firms. Instead, it was driven by companies controlled by super-wealthy individuals, small and opaque firms that file minimal financial information, and businesses ultimately owned by foreign nationals who could not legally donate in their own name,” they added.

Just five companies gave over £27m to Labour and the Conservatives in the year before the 2024 election.

Overall, political donations from companies tripled over the last three general elections, the Democracy for Sale analysis found.

Across all parties and politicians, companies gave more than £42m in the year leading up to the 2024 election, almost double the £21.5m donated ahead of the 2019 election and triple the £14m donated before the 2017 election.

Earlier this month, the UK fell to record lows in Transparency International’s global corruption perception index, with the report’s authors citing the increasing presence of wealthy donors in British politics as one reason for the fall.
