FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 20, 2026 CHARLOTTESVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING IN DOWNTOWN AREA CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) is releasing the following information regarding an officer involved shooting that occurred in the early morning hours today in the area of Market Street Park in downtown Charlottesville. Officers received information that an individual by the name of Daquan Hoffman wanted by Albemarle County on a charge of malicious wounding was in the area of the Downtown Mall. Officers located the individual, who immediately fled on foot. During the foot pursuit several shots were fired, at which point Mr. Hoffman continued to flee. At this time, it does not appear that the suspect was struck by gunfire, and the officer was not injured. Chief Kochis has requested that the Virginia State Police lead the investigation into this incident in coordination with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy. Chief Kochis has also briefed the Police Civilian Oversight Board (PCOB) Executive Director Walker on this incident. The Virginia State Police will serve as the lead investigative agency. CPD will release additional information as it becomes available and as the investigation permits. A region of the northern Atlantic–sometimes called the “cold blob”–has cooled since the 19th Century while the rest of the world has warmed. It is particularly the ocean which has cooled there. Scientists have been discussing whether this is because ocean currents bring less heat into this region, or because more heat is being lost through the sea surface there. An analysis of temperature data sets based on measurements show it is the former–changing ocean heat transport–which dominates heat content changes in the “cold blob.” This is of concern because a further weakening of Atlantic heat transport in future climate change could lead to serious impacts on climate and weather conditions in Europe and other parts of the world.

Dear Colleagues, As you may be aware, there is a nationwide Canvas outage due to a cybersecurity incident reported by Canvas’ parent company, Instructure, earlier this week. UVACanvas and its counterparts (Law Canvas, etc.) are all down. This is a quickly evolving situation, and the University will post updates on the UVACanvas page of the ITS site as they are made available to us. We will issue a community-wide message as soon as possible and are writing to you now because you are included in a list of instructors with exams scheduled for this evening and tomorrow morning that was provided by the University Registrar. If you are able to administer your exam outside of UVACanvas, please do so. Please communicate directly with your students about your plans for exams and assignments outside of UVACanvas. We will provide more information as it becomes available and encourage you to bookmark the page linked above and visit it for updates as this situation evolves.
