And I'm like 'I never once said that.' I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men." Cunningham's framing here is contradictory and espouses the exact type of rhetoric resulting in the persecution of—and aggressive, intentional efforts to erode—the trans community. In these statements about youth sports, Cunningham cites "young girls" while equating their trans sisters to "biological men," creating an illusion of greater disparity between athletic participants, when the science has shown, repeatedly, there are no natural, meaningful, or inherent advantages to being a youth transfemme athlete. In Cunningham's hyper-specific framing the "men" are still within the age group of "girls," who Cunningham does not refer to as "women," whether she realizes it or not. Studies have shown (again, repeatedly) that denying care and support for trans athletes is likely to increase the risk of suicide in trans youth due to perceived contempt, a contempt that Cunningham continues to subtly further with her comments despite her claims to the contrary. Comments that continue to see a need for "protection" against an imaginary, uncontrollable hostility ascribed to athletic transfemme individuals that simply does not exist. A group that Cunningham presents as an insidious monolithic entity encompassing identical behavioral traits and personalities, even in a statement purporting to "not hate" trans individuals. Perhaps the insidious force that Cunningham should be monitoring instead are the parasitic brainworms of Republican messaging.
