Spider-man has leapt from the top of the Statue of Liberty and flown to Ellis Island on a hang-glider made from his webbing. He lands on the island, noticing the wreck of the Ellis Island ferry, and proceeds to the Great Hall, where new immigrants would be given medical checks which would decide whether they could board the ferry and enter America. "It is not his spider-sense at work but his imagination. Below him seems to be a parade of ghosts. Ghosts of the countless millions crowding through the "golden door" which they prayed would lead to a better life in America. He can almost hear the glamour of their voices... a babble of Irish, Italian, middle-European, Slavic and Oriental tongues. He senses the pervasive atmosphere of fear. Fear of coming to a new land, fear of not knowing a new language, fear of foreign customs and of officials in uniform. Fear that the island doctors would diagnose the flea bites and coughs acquired on unsheltered and overcrowded ships as contagious diseases, thus barring admission to families who would rather die than return from whence they came."
