OHIO DEMOCRATS PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS Regarding Amy Acton's recent statement on trans youth in sports: We amplify the voices of our progressive members across Ohio. Our members have rightfully had a range of reactions to the recent statement, so our collective response is likewise varied, however: We are unified in believing Democrats win when they 1) unapologetically defend victims of MAGA fearmongering and 2) Make clear their plan to improve the material conditions of everyday Ohioans. ZERO Ohioans have become better able to buy groceries by keeping child sport players away from their favorite sport. Our hearts break for those kids. Those who disagree with that will never vote - let alone doorknock - for Amy Acton. Simultaneously, our progressive members were more ready to doorknock for her than they are today in light of her recent statement. Not out of malice, but out of the bad feeling in our chests. Any one of us could have warned her of that natural consequence if any one of us had been in the room with her. Despite our disagreement on this issue, we remain ready to work with her to achieve our shared goals to improve life in Ohio. Currently her inner circle does not include a voice representing the newest and largest constituency caucus in Ohio. We believe she will be best equipped to win in November by having a FULL picture of what her constituents want. We hope she will allow us to provide our missing piece of that picture as she goes forward.

Adam Carolla's co-host wanted some clarity on what he meant after he said the rape accusation, which forced Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner (D) to quit his race, sounded more like a "basic drunken dude thing" than sexual assault. The veteran podcaster talked about the accusation during his Sunday podcast. "This stuff sounds like drunken dude behavior," Carolla said. "People get weird with this stuff, but I would say most every guy I know did what he's being accused of at one point or another with their girlfriend at some point after a night of drinking." He continued, "It's basically like: I'm drunk, I'm horny, I weigh 50 pounds more than you, we're gonna have sex, it's not really rape because we sleep in the same bed and I'm just gonna pass out and then the next day I won't really remember what happened but I'll buy you some flowers. It's a basic drunken dude thing."

These are not isolated incidents. White supremacy is staring all of us in the face everyday, playing chicken with us and daring us to admit we see it. It was staring many Democratic politicians in the face on Sunday as their phones chirped with the news of Lindsey Graham's death. It stared at all the people who heard about three white "friends" leaving their Black friend behind who then decided that it was no big deal. (And let's be real. Even if those "friends" didn't harm Nolan, they are some super shitty "friends" to leave Nolan behind.) White supremacy was staring white Democratic voters in the face every time a Graham Platner red flag dropped. Many Black folks saw white supremacy giving Platner the benefit of the doubt over and over. Many women who are used to not being believed when they report sexual assault saw it. Did you see it? Be honest.

What struck me about these defenses of Platner is that they are yearning for a more masculine aesthetic in their politics. They desperately want the left to return to the old hammer and sickle days of the early Soviet Union when propaganda depicted communism with a blonde haired blue eyed fit man toiling in the fields or the factory. The combination of Platner's gravelly voice, blonde hair, and Downeast Maine oysterman appearance makes these guys wet. The candidate had them in the first frame of he his slickly produced ad announcing his candidacy.

The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not. And frankly, changing course is in their own business interests since trust in legacy media has now fallen to an all time low of just 9% and are ratings disasters. The American people have subsidized broadcasters to the tune of billions of dollars by providing free access to the nation's airwaves. It is very important to bring trust back into media, which has earned itself the label of fake news.
