An except from the book "The Limits of Genius" by me (Katie Spalding): I am, of course, talking about The Calculus Controversy. Do you remember calculus? You might have studied it right at the end of high school, or maybe later if you carried on doing maths at university - and if you aren't familiar, it's basically the maths of constant change. Acceleration; population growth; radioactive decay; even the spread of viruses; pretty much anything that grows or shrinks or moves any way relies on calculus to describe it in mathematical terms. Now, Newton invented calculus at some point in the 1660s, and he deserves some credit for that, but unfortunately he refused to tell anybody about it for about thirty years. By this point, having noticed a gap in the market, Leibniz - remember him? The guy with the wig sheep - had come up with his own version, and, crucially, he actually published it. Oh well, sucks to be Newton, you might think, but what you're not taking into account is how completely fucking absurd England is and always has been as a nation. Despite it not really making much sense as an idea, what with Leibniz living in an entirely different country and all, Newton loudly accused Leibniz of copying his secret new maths, and for the next couple of centuries scientists from Britain obstinately used Newton's calculus (clumsy but patriotic) while in the rest of Europe everyone used Leibniz's (better but unfortunately German). Therefore, if a child does not want to use the toilet designated for their biological sex, schools and colleges should consider whether they can provide an alternative toilet facility, for example self-contained individual toilets, without compromising the provision of single-sex facilities, without compromising the provision of single-sex facilities. These alternative arrangements should not compromise the safety, comfort, privacy or dignity of the child, or of other children. 109. It is important that schools and colleges keep a clear record of these situations, ensure they are communicated appropriately, and review them regularly. 110. Where a school or college provides mixed-sex toilets in addition to single- sex toilets, schools and colleges should assess safeguarding risks and plan accordingly, for example, mixed-sex toilets should open directly onto public areas (e.g. a corridor).

We were the children who queued outside bookstores and cinemas at midnight. We got Harry Potter tattoos, threw Harry Potter themed weddings and named our children after characters from the novels — baby names like Hermione, Luna and Draco. We interpreted our politics through the lens of the wizarding world, comparing those we disagreed with to the books’ main villain, Lord Voldemort, and carrying signs with slogans like “Dumbledore’s Army” and “Hermione wouldn’t stand for this!” at Women’s Marches. And some of us even took deeper moral cues from the books, reading them like a new Bible, treating the works as sacred texts with religious teachings to convey.
