We invite parents and caregivers of children getting services for developmental concerns to participate in a virtual interview for a research study to help us learn how families find and access support and what makes this process easier or more difficult How will the interview information be used? • We will use this information to improve the ways families hear about and access supports • No information that could identify you or your child will be shared in any way Who are we hoping to learn from? • Families with concerns about their child's development • Families who are waiting for or have received a developmental or autism evaluation • Families from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, linguistic and geographic backgrounds • Families who have experienced challenges accessing support for their child. WHAT iS TWICE-EXCEPTIONAL? Some children are gifted in areas such as math, writing or music. Others have learning challenges like autism, ADHD, dyslexia or dyscalculia, or sensory processing issues. But there are also those who fit into both categories. They're called "twice-exceptional," or 2e, meaning they have exceptional ability & disability. Gifted kids may use their strengths to cover their struggles, making learning issues harder to spot. SPARK Foundation Newsletter What's New with SPARK? Wendy K. Chung, M.D., Ph.D. For research to be meaningful, it needs to represent the entire autism community. SPARK's commitment to representation has been one of our biggest accomplishments. Recruitment efforts have expanded to support outreach in communities historically underrepresented in research, including African American and Black communities. In 2023, we launched an initiative to reach the African American community through a series of community health talks. SPARK worked with faith leaders and researchers in cities around the country to help congregations become more knowledgeable and learn how autism impacts families. It was through these outreach efforts that we were able to create SPARK in the Community. SPARK in the Community aims to support and encourage parents and community leaders from all backgrounds by connecting them with autism researchers and clinicians. Since 2024, SPARK in the Community has reached hundreds of autistic children, adults, and families from coast to coast, and we can't wait to see where we pop up next! Join us on Wednesday, February 25, at noon Eastern Time for our February webinar, "Awareness to Action: Combating Autism Disparities in Black Communities." During this webinar, Natasha Nelson will present a call to action for researchers, families, and clinicians. She will discuss why disparities exist in Black communities and what needs to change to turn awareness into action.
